Has anyone tried the new drug Galliprant? Its a new drug for the treatment of osteoarthritis and doesn't have the same side affects of like Rimidyl. I'm starting Eli on it.

Sandra, I picked up the pups and they have both been placed on it. Apparently its really having good responses, so much so that the company is backordered on the meds. As far as price, for Eli its about $108 per month. Shoshi is smaller so it will be less but I wasn't able to get a full rx for her due to the backorder. We are hopeful that it becomes available very soon.

It's too new to have much feedback on it yet. However, I would not use it unless your dog has been tested for the mdr1 mutation and is clear. This is the recommendation of the lab that developed the canine mdr1 test.

Buddy is in his second month on it. He is almost 17 and has a tumor on his liver.

He is 65#, and takes 60 mg once a day and it is good for him. He is more energetic and sleeping less. I credit better pain control for my old, three legged boy. (He is also on tramadol and gabepentin)

It is on back order and that should be resolved within a month according to what we've been told. The office where I work got in 3 bottles of 20 mg and we're using that this month.

I think for dogs with elevated liver #s, or liver problems in general it will prove to be valuable.

I agree with Lisa. If there is any chance of the mdr1 mutation, test first.

That's great news Bonnie, thanks for sharing. Eli has liver issues and undergone several tests today. Not ready to write about all that but its nice to have a good pain med for those with kidney and liver issues.

I am very interested in this for Chico, thanks for the info!
I will ask the vet about it and the test for the mdr1 mutation.

Lisa, thank you for posting about the MDR1 gene and this drug. I was all excited about this, but now we would have to proceed carefully since Sammy does have the gene. Thankfully, right now he's just taking Glycoflex 3 supplements and doesn't need anything stronger.

Humm, I specifically asked my Vet about this and she said I didn't have to worry as both of my pups are purebred GSDS. Is this not true???

edit-I'm referring to the MDR1 gene.

Not sure what your vet meant, but 10% of German Shepherds are affected by the MDR1 gene. Purebred or mixed can have this gene. Here's a list of the breeds: http://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu/affected-breeds
And a list of the drugs that are a problem for an MDR1 dog: https://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu/problem-drugs

I would have never known Sammy had the gene until he got really sick from an Ivermectin injection right after we adopted him.

Testing is usually a cheek swab I think, but they do have a blood test now. Kris posted the link above with the most info.

IIRC, Kris' Sammie was the first non-white GSD they found with the mutation????

The drug company should be distributing this info with the drug frown

I wonder if the lab keeps a database of every dog tested where they could look up yours?
