Hey all, not sure this is the best place but I need some advice regarding my poorly GSD. Tara is almost ten and has always had the occasional fainting spell, the vet said it's her heart but because it was so rare and it didn't bother her, he suggested not treating it (you treat the symptoms not the condition) Anyway, in the last three days she has developed a cough, my local vet said it could be kennel or it could be her heart. The cough strangely and potentially coincidentally started the day I gave her some metacam as she was acting a bit lethargic, which at her age is normally her sore legs. Her cough is dry and almost makes her heave. She's eating and drinking and going the toilet but she is coughing when resting which I know isn't a good sign. The cough seems to be making her feel pretty sorry for herself even though she maybe coughs every few hours.

The vet said to give her a week and give her the metacam daily but obviously I want to act to help her now. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm willing to pay the 600 to have the scans but they say if the issue isn't happening at the time nothing will be seen and 600 isn't something I can afford to waste.

She's still playful and affectionate, but clearly not herself.

Perhaps you want to take her to a vet cardiologist? I'm not much help with any other recommendation. If metacam coincided with the onset of the cough of course it could be coincidence or it could be cause. I can understand concern about trying more metacam but don't know what more to say about that. What a predicament.

Perhaps others will weigh in as I wonder if this might be the onset of pneumonia?

Regardless,
Best wishes for Tara's return to health.

Can you stop the metacam for 48 hours and see if the cough stops? I agree with a referral to a specialist if you can afford it. Hope Tara gets better soon

With coughing and her age I would want a quick chest radiograph to rule out cancer in her lungs. Either primary or metastatic. I'm not sure if that's what you meant by the cost of scans or if it is other types of scans you are referring to. In any event, I wish you and Tara the best of luck and hope you get answers soon.

In people, NSAIDs have heart implications, so I might also suspect them in dogs.

I like to be proactive and know what I'm dealing with, so I would want to have some tests run to check out the heart. I agree with Sandy that an xray would be a good place to start, not just to check the lungs, but also the size fo the heart. Once you get the results from the xrays, then go from there.

ETA: the xrays can help determine if there are issues with lungs or heart. If it is the heart, I would see the cardiologist - there is often a big difference between the care the specialist will give vs a vet, primarily because they keep up on the latest science if you have a good specialist.
