Just joined and am anxious to learn all I can about German Shepherds.

A little background. I home senior Labrador retrievers and always have at least 2. When Bandit passed leaving us just Mardi, my husband said he wanted a GSD. I agreed as long as it was not a puppy. We're no spring chickens and could not do justice to what a puppy needs. We went to a "breeder" and met Archie, 5 years old, a lovely, loveable black and tan. All the red flags were raised on meeting the "breeder" and I knew better but we stepped aside and decided we could not leave this poor boy in the situation he was in through no fault of his own. He had ticks, hookworms, looked like a musk ox in shed and his breath was horrible. He also needed to be neutered. Spay and two very extensive dental surgeries later (nine teeth removed), he had extremely bad teeth due to neglect, he settled in very nicely.

That started my journey to learn more about GSDs, taking him (but mostly me) to training and learning how a GSD sees the world and learns. He and Mardi got along well but she passed about 5 months ago. Now I am really concentrating on him. I do have some health questions and will post those in the appropriate section. Looking forward to chatting with you.

Lucky Archie! After a not so fine deal somewhere along the line, you came along! Welcome to the board. A 5yo can be lots of fun to work.

5 is a good age. Many thanks to you for saving Archie.
Looks like the 'breeder' was not in it for the
benefit of the breed. Very sad.

Thanks for the welcomes.

Indeed, we call Archie our rescue as no dog should have to live like he did. He's now discovering the water bowl is always full, meals are on time, and the couch is one comfy place.

Welcome to you and Archie - he is one lucky boy :-) I have a rescue myself and it is a very rewarding journey.

Great job on saving Archie. We have had a lot of rescue dogs over the years and horses. Always a great feeling to save one and give him or her a great home.

Great place to be to learn about German Shepherds.

We just got our first 2 a little over a week ago. Been around Shepherds all our lives....now just feel we have the space and time to dedicate to them !
