Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and really need your guidance here.
We as a family waited for many years and when we thought finally the time was right, we got home a 8 week old GSD male puppy. itís been with us for three weeks now, and is 11 weeks old.

he is a very handsome and cute looking puppy and gets a lot of attention. When we take him on his little walks down the street, he gets overly excited to see all other dogs and can barely control himself.. isn't that great !! .. even when strangers stop to admire him or say a quick hello.. same reaction jumps all over them licks them.. goes crazy.. great excitement.. isnít that what puppies are all about...

Now the problem.. when home.. he does nothing of that stuff with us. he just lays around from one corner to the other. if we go to pet him / cuddle him. just gets up and walks away. if we try to pick him up and cuddle him, just wants to be left alone. no matter what toys we bring for him, and try to engage him, rarely ever gets excited.. and just looks the other way.

My children were so excited to finally be able to have a puppy and they are really heartbroken at this time as the only thing they get from him is "cold shoulder". I have owned dogs before and one of the major joys of dog ownership is the unconditional love and affection the dog gives to the family.. unfortunately in this case that love and affection is missing.

I know some of you might say he is young give him time and heís been with you only a month.. but isnít a month more than enough to get used to people and a place ??

Can anyone please give us some guidance on how to proceed with this situation.. thanks

It's hard to say without a complete picture. He may have a more aloof personality. Also, maybe he is feeling pestered by the family members, which could drive him to retreat a bit more. I would respect his personality and not force it. That's not to say ignore him, but just let him come out and engage on his own terms- and when he does, praise with lots of food and play and love... which should make him want to do it more. Build on that. That's my two cents.

Exactly.
He might not like a lot of praise and affection. GSDs are 'supposed' to be
somewhat aloof. They aren't labs or goldens. Give him space and let him come
to you. Put some different types of toys out and see what he likes. He may just
ignore them for a while. My dog is 7 and she still doesn't like to be petted
unless she asks for it, which is rare. Like your pup, she is very friendly with
people that come in our house to the point of being a pest but she eventually
settles down. I think the excessive friendliness is insecurity. She is secure
with us and doesn't need a lot of TLC ... once again she is a GSD.
Only using my dog as one example. Maybe others will add their experiences.

Hi,

I don't have any experience with puppies, but it took some strategy to get my very shy GSD to play. In front of my dear Wolf, I took a toy or a ball and played with it myself, tossed the ball up and down or hugged the squeaky toy. I pretended to enjoy it and he got the idea.

An aloof puppy may be quite different from a shy rescue, but maybe it will work.

I bet your dog is adorable smile

Welcome to the forum.

All puppies have their own personality. Your pup sounds a lot like my Cheyenne was. There were very few people in her life she met and didn't like, she was a Social Butterfly in public. At home she would be perfectly content to just lay and chew on a bone or play with a toy while she watched me. She spent a lot of her life watching me. I really enjoyed her Social side as she was a good representative of the GSD breed.

As a pup, I would sit on the floor and as MJ said and draw her to me, so it was her decision to interact with me and I wasn't pushing myself on her. Even in her old age, if I sat on the floor she would come over by me. She wasn't one that enjoyed being hugged on, but was quite content to just have some part of her body touching mine.

My other past GSD's would sit in my lap if I allowed it. Cheyenne was very much an Alpha female so the hugging and cuddling wasn't really acceptable to her.

Sounds like Anna. Even as a puppy, she was never touchy-feely, she would play with us and follow and stuff, but she never liked being held/in a lap/petted a lot etc. She's still like that. She's awesome, bonded strongly to us and loves her peeps, but not a big touch dog.

Then there's Panzer. Who is a giant loving doofus who think's he's a lap dog at 75lbs (and still growing!), wants and demands to be petted and is always all up in your business.

No matter the personality type, you'll still have a great dog for life! There's nothing like a GSD!

Hey Guys thanks a lot for your suggestions and comments everyone. I guess he will only get closer to us as time progresses.. and i totally i agree that we have to respect his individual personality..

Happy to be a part of this community, and definitely looking forward to years of togetherness with our little boy Caesar !!

Another thought - maybe the kids would be into this - is to lie on the ground/floor yourself. Perhaps roll around a bit with one of the toys (or each other if a solo doesn't work). That can sucker puppies right in.

That coupled with what others have suggested which is to back off the expectations and let the pup come to you. (Maybe he will be excited to see the kids if they are gone for a while so they seem 'new' when they come back?)

I like what was said about giving the toy attention yourself. Make it valuable, act like it is a true prize so he has to work a bit for it.

Some dogs are deeply devoted, without being very affectionate. Such dogs bond through time in companionship spent together, or perhaps play. Some of the more aloof dogs can make the most devoted, even if not demonstrative. Respecting these differences and just enjoying amd appreciating him as an individual will have the bond you want (even if not the type of engagement you want) to develop quicker.
