Hi, my 1 and a half year old GSD has a skin problem. This is the second time it happened to her in a period of 2 months. The vet had her skin scraped to check for mange. Result was negative. It was in her front left leg. There was a hair loss and the vet prescribed antibiotic. It was completely healed and the hair has grown. Now it's in her left rear leg. This time the second vet prescribed Genta spray to be applied 3 times a day. My GSD hates it when I apply the medicine.

Just wanted to ask if someone had experienced this kind of problem. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum, sorry that you are having skin problems with your dog.

It is very possible that it isn't mange at all but a Staph infection. It seems that out GSD's can be prone to Staph infections. The only way to be sure is to do a Culture.

There are a few other things it could be, a thyroid problem, an auto immune problem, could be an allergy related problem.

Let's start with allergy possibility. What are you feeding? What type of cleaning products do you use and do you have your lawn treated or fertilized?

Welcome - Sorry to hear about your dogs skin problem. Many things can cause skin issues and you will need to get your detective hat on to try and find out what it is.for me the three biggest ones I would be asking questions about are:

Food - any change in diet? Have you introduced new food, treats, raw hide around the time the problem started? Canine dietician Monica Segal's web site has some really good info on the link between skin issues and food - really worth checking out.

Environment - cleaning products can cause serious problems for sensitive dogs - try changing to non toxic ones or cutting them out completely for one month and see if it makes a difference. Garden chemicals can also cause skin reactions so again have a good think - any new one introduced?

Vaccines - well know for causing skin problems - did your dog have any prior to problem starting?

Good luck - the origin of skin problems can be tricky to identify but if you can find the trigger then you can generally solve the proble.

I just wanted to say HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!! welcome

goodluck I hope you'll be able to get your girl's skin issues cleared up ... I know how difficult that can be. It looks like you've had a lot of good suggestions from other forum members!!!

About 30some years ago I had a WGSD named Tex who developed terrible skin issues ... black weepy areas, some so bad that they had to be surgically removed. I'm not sure how much money I spent on this problem but it was substantial. Finally after years of numerous tests and several surgical procedures to remove the black/weepy areas it was finally brought under control by Fulvicin which he took for the remainder of his life.
