One thing that I have noticed in the last few days, and I wanted to see if anyone else has ever experienced it (or if i am truly losing it!).

Very often thru the day - I will just very momentarily, "start" and think i have to go see/feed Baron or maybe "it's time to go for a walk" or to "take him to the park" or even "time to set up and do some formal OB/Rally training".

Of course as soon as the thought enters what is left of my mind, it is replaced with "Oh %$%$, he is not here!"

I am amazed at how many times this occured in the last few days.

I guess that we actually spent a lot more time with him than it seemed at the time!

Definitely! Dogs aren't the only routine-driven beings. Not only that, we
look up and expect to see them in a certain spot. Or when we go shopping we
still go down the pet products aisle. And we plan our day around the times
we scheduled for dog activities ... and now we have to figure out what to
do with the extra time. Gradually, the holes get filled in until we
get the next dog, which disturbs our new schedule.

I think it's perfectly natural and would venture to say that 99.9% of people do that. I know I did, even put the windows in the back seat of the car down half-way thinking he was going with me for a ride. It took forever for me to clean the smudge marks off them too. To this day I still feel his presence in the house and think he's sleeping on the floor next to my side of the bed so in short, no, you're not going daft. Baron was a very personal part of your life. hug

I was exactly the same when Chamsa died - she was with me 24/7 - I think it's a normal response to losing a such a close friend

Hi from Australia,

We have two GSD both have different issues, but our female 8yr old has DM, I will try to give you some information and some care suggestions, but in regards, to when and how long it is all individual for each different dog and how they are cared for also depending on if you are giving meds to help them.

I could explain what we do for our GSD if you would like, she is on meds that are beneficial for dogs with DM to slow it down and lots of different vitamins that also help.

Hope this helps,
Cheers

all info I have seen/hear about DM says there is no treatments for it. it is genetic and spinal cord deterioration.

Cosmaster sorry about Baron I did not realise. I know there is no treatment to cure DM but there is treatment the COULD and i believe can help to slow progression. We all believe and our vets agree that without the treatment we r doing our beautiful happy MYA would have passed long ago. She has had DM definitely a year but most likely longer and we did not realise the symptoms. I am a nurse and understand how DM works, just wanting to share with others what we have done for our girl. ATM she is still able to get around but does have worse days than other's. She is very happy, but when the time comes that quality of life is no longer there we will let her go.
