HI, anyone have experience with pulmonary hypertension? Gracie (who's 9 1/2 yrs now) was diagnosed yesterday via physical exam (panting, cynaosis, increased respiratory effort, increased bronchial sounds) and xrays (main stem airway dilation). She had cardiac profile run. That came back high (normal 0-900, she's at 1031). Next step is echocardiogram. She's currently on theophylline 100 mg twice a day (will work up to 200 mg twice a day).

Any input is appreciated!

THANKS

Poor Gracie. I haven't had Cheyenne checked by she pants and has more bronchial sounds, but she is 13 and almost a half.

Sending strength vibes to Gracie.

There were some questions whether max had this. One human radiologist said it looked like it, the canine cardiologist said it didn't. He had the same symptoms as you describe, but those can happen with a lot of things.

Max's issues were, uh, "special", so I don't expect this to apply to gracie, but xrays showed he was hypovolemic, confirmed by echocardiogram - one side of the heart had become small and there was not enough fluid/blood in his system. Addison's was ruled out, and the leading and most consistent theory was he was in a weird state of walking sepsis, probably from a pathogenic strain of e. coli, which means it was probably something I brought home from my parents. The IMS said he thought that max's veins were "leaky" from the infection. In addition to a combination of abx, I treated this with regular vitamin C infusions. Separate from that, he had "old man lungs" for reasons we don't really know, the internist thought there was some chronic underlying inflammation. In hindsight, I think the high chlorine content of our tap water had was a contributing factor.

I'm sure gracie's issues are something more straight forward. Best of luck today - hope the testing gives you answers.

The veterinary cardiologist did an echocardiogram and Gracie was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. Her heart is dilating at only 20%, if I understood him correctly. Also had 2/6 murmur. She's on theophylline, enalapril and vetmedin. She needs to stay rested, cool and go back for echo again in 2-3 months to see if there is any progression. Also, he noticed her spleen was enlarged so she goes for abdominal ultrasound next week. It's only money......

Anyway, I"m tired. She's tired. I was hoping to just coast along during her golden years.

Gracie is ok today. Actually went upstairs for the first time in 2 weeks and slept on the bed with my husband when I went to work. She seems to be breathing easier and had a really good night last night. She'd been up restless walking around a lot the previous few nights.

Jen, this really sucks, I'm very sorry. Unfortunately, I will have to create a new health sticky for this with your links frown

My first thought when reading about DCM, is that it appears to be an inflammatory disorder with defects in how the collagen in the heart is distributed. My first thought before reading up on it is that this often occurs as a result of chronic lyme disease. Knowing Gracie's long term issues, I would be inclined to consider doxycycline treatment for her, both as a unique anti-inflammatory, and it also affects how collage is turned over. In fact, Jazz's collagen and inflammatory disorder responds wonderfully to doxycycline, though I can only have her on half the necessary dose because of her liver (the only dog I've had with a doxy sensitivity). I did find this which would support the use of doxy in DCM: http://www.jimmunol.org/content/183/7/4773.long

With any inflammatory disorder, the use of turmeric or curcumin should also always be considered, if it's tolerated.

If you haven't seen this, it's a nice overview of heart issues and nutrition: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2fU7S3...OGYy/view?pli=1
I think DCM is one where taurine deficiency has been associated, but I'd have to look that up. I get my taurine for the dogs from Monica Segal, since it's not sourced from China. That article will address that question, as well as other nutrients that are helpful.

I don't know much about DCM, so I don't know exactly when vetmedin should be started. It does make the heart contract stronger, which generally should be a good thing. However, studies have shown in mitral valve disease that it can speed up heart disease by stressing the heart. In MVD, vetmedin is only started once the dog goes into congestive heart failure, determined by whether there is fluid in the lungs. I know that a lot of veterinarians and even cardiologists don't follow this guideline and start it too soon. It's just something that I would double check.

I sure hope that you find the best protocol for her so that she can have a great quality of life, and be with you for A LOT longer hugging
