Tippy is my mom and dad's little Chihuahua mix. He is a delight to spend time with and has done well for his 9 years.

This morning dad called as usual, but had bad news.

Tippy had some- as in a little bit of blood on his whiskers, and his back leg was not working right. They are taking him to the vet, however, they do not want to just drop him off, so are trying to wait till they know the vet is there and can see him quickly. Tippy has not eaten this morning but did drink some water. I told dad to with hold food till they see the vet.

Tippy sleeps on a twin bed in moms room at night. He cannot jump off of it, and is especially tucked in every night so he can't fall off either.

I suspect a possible seizure and dad is thinking stroke. Neither one is good. The timing is terrible in the long run. We are dealing with my moms diagnoses of Dementia. She is not doing really well; dealing with extreme confusion and some depression. Dad plans on having me start taking care of their finances as mom struggles with it. Lots going on in making needed changes in her care. Having anything else go wrong right now would just be devastating for us all.

So I am writing to ask for prayers for our little guy. I don't want to upset my kids, brothers etc and this is the first place I thought to come.

Bev,

Well if you came first here for some support for little Tippy, then you are welcome to what I can give.

Really, I hope a simple solution can be found for his ailment, so he can keep your folks company for a long time to come.

Oh Tippy - is it cold there? Is there snow or ice where maybe he slipped and fell in the dark? I hope he's okay!

(or mud is slick!)

There is snow, but this happened sometime in the night or as they were waking up this morning. Little guy is so spoiled that he only goes out to potty and is right back in (so are my big dogs much of the time)

I just got back from over there and he is walking differently, acts like his leg is stiff and kinda hops or skips w/that leg to not use it as much. Dad was talking of waiting till Monday to go to vet, and I said they should follow through and go today. If this was a seizure or something worse they need to know and treat now. It could also be that he was shifting his weight in the night and pinched a nerve. As for the blood on his face, I suspect he bit his tongue somehow. Either way, I feel he should be checked out today for safety measures. I would hate to see him have another episode (for lack of better description) tonight and see it do more damage or worse.

I think you are right not to wait.

Poor Tippy. frown

crossedfingers Good thought on possibly biting the tongue, but again there is the why.

He is still pretty young, so that's in his favor.

I'll be back watching for updates.

Edited to add: I'm glad you came here where your friends care.

Sent you a PM regarding your folks instead of the dog. Sounds like you've got the dog covered. Hope it is something easily taken care of.

Sending good thoughts for Tippy. Hope he just strained his leg and nothing serious.

It is hard dealing with aging parents and their problems and then to have their little dog ill too.

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes!

Tippy gets to see the vet today after 1pm. They waited too long on Saturday and got there after they closed at noon. They took him in first thing this morning, but they are full till later.

Mom is still struggling every day to get through the day. The memory is just a bad thing to lose. Yesterday she told my brother at breakfast that she thought I didn't join them because I was disgusted with her. That broke my heart. I had been there every day all week, and opted for a day at home was all. Guess I will have to rethink my choices and look at things from her perspective more. Dad is dealing with a lot, between her, Tippy, and trying to decide how we proceed.

Gotta go. time to grab a bite and get over there.

Thanks again everyone!

Okay, the got Tippy in Monday afternoon. Vet couldn't see anything wrong. Couldn't tell if maybe Tippy had a stroke or seizure. Treated with Rimadyl for the back leg that was stiff and causing a l imp. I will be watching to be sure he doesn't develop any other symptoms. Vet also thinks he might have a tooth that needs to be pulled.

Mom had a good day yesterday. She & I had a few good ol belly laughs, and she and dad also had a few goold ol belly laughs. Dad said she seems to be having a good morning so far today. Hoping her meds are starting to level out and work appropriately.

Great news about your folks and guardedly good news about little Tippy. Let's hope this is a new positive trend for everybody.

Best of luck with everything. If the rimadyl helps, you might try some joint supplements instead. If it doen't help, that definitely points to something more neurological.

Thanks Ladies!

I have been keeping an eyes on both Tippy and my mom. Both seem to be improving. I can only hope this trend continues!
