Barb, I'm glad Dante is doing better. As I was reading these posts, it sounded more and more like what I experienced with Luna. Especially the knuckling of the back paw.

She had been experiencing increased weakness in her hind quarters, which we initially assumed was her sub-luxated hips, and tried cold laser therapy, which made things worse (and decidely painful for her). When she lost the function in her back right leg we went to the specialist and had an MRI right away.

Her spine was 50% compressed with one ruptured disk and two bulging disks. Immediate surgery (hemilaminectomy to remove two disks), and she back home after about three days. We had several months of physical therapy, including water therapy. We were lucky to find a great pet sitter that would come in and do her PT in the middle of the day.

She sustained some permanent nerve damage, but three years later we still walk a mile each morning (she's 12-1/2).

All the best of luck with Dante's recovery. He looks like he's doing wonderfully, and he is lucky to have someone take such good care of him.

I am just amazed at how quickly he is recovering. So glad this turned out this way. What a trooper.

Thank you again everyone!!

Just got back from his follow-up and everything is going well! Dr Skinner is very happy with the result, as am I.

Dante and I are now cleared to walk as much as we want (I'll start slow), it is ok if he trots some.
No running or jumping for another 6 weeks and we go back in a month.

cheers

On another note, had Kaos in to the ER Vet last night when she started pooping blood. Not a little blood in her poop, more like a little poop in the blood.

They ran blood work and a fecal, both came back ok. The PCV (test they use for HGE) came back in the normal range so I brought her home with some metronidazole and some FortiFlora and she's on a bland diet. There has not been any more bloody poops since I took her in crossedfingers but I haven't yet fed her today. I wanted to get home from Dante's appointment first so I could be around to take her out if she needs to go.

I've seen a lot of diarrhea in dog(s) in my 10 years of having Dante/Kaos, some with blood in it, but I have never seen anything like what happened with Kaos last night!
It was scary!!

You must have nerves of steel!

Have a calming walk with Dante. I'm sure Kaos will enjoy her chicken and rice.

Dante and I walk to the end of my street and back every day, he's happy and engaged. I heard one scuff of a hind paw yesterday so that is vastly improved!

And.... poop Kaos just had her first poop since the whole ER visit! Fairly solid (in the old days of Dante's poop issues I would have called it "soft but pickable") and not a sign of visible blood!!!!
I actually added some pumpkin to her food starting last night, I was getting a little concerned that even though she's eating small meals of rice/chicken that she hadn't yet pooped!

Thank you all!

Yesterday he was laying out in the backyard, I decided it was time for him to come in.
As soon as we made eye contact I knew this wasn't what he wanted.

He got up, I asked him to "down" with verbal command and hand signal. Now this is a command he's been good at for almost 11 years. In his younger days he'd down so fast it would make your head spin.

Yesterday? He play-bowed, barked and then ran.

3 times!!

He still has some weakness in the hind end, but we can both live with that smile

It's now been just over 6 months since Dante's surgery!

A few notes:
He now scratches his back legs after he poops
He's so happy and content
Once in awhile he'll get the zoomies in the house and so I'll get him out side quickly where there are no sharp turns or fear of him going in the kitchen.
He's always been one to show his "red rocket" when he gets excited, this has increased by a hundred fold.
He'll from time to time drop a turd in the house, hence he has a new nickname of TD (Turd Dropper). There seems to be more urgency or perhaps it's that there isn't as much warning. Thankfully the Nature's Logic really agrees with him so they're always solid and very little smell.
He can not be loose with Kaos, this will never be able to happen again. This is the one thing that makes me sad, but she's too exuberant and he gets too excited and I just can't take the chance of him falling or her slamming into him.

11.25 years old smile

I am so pleased with the outcome!

What a wonderful update. Interesting about the TD aspect, but it sure could be worse if his food wasn't agreeing with him.

Over 11 and still doing the zoomies. Scary, but awesome as well.

Way to go, Dante.
