Oh wow...I also hope it's something else, but if not, all strength to you and to him. He's a stunning boy.

Oh Gayle, I'm so sorry, you're poor boy and poor you for having to watch him go downhill. It's so heartbreaking. Wasn't long ago that we thought Riley may have DM but it was Metronidizole Toxicity so he's ok now. But I do remember that fear that DM could be the problem. My thoughts are with you, your boy is gorgeous!

I want to thank everyone for your messages ... Slider is going in for his 2nd acupuncture session this afternoon ... hopefully he'll benefit even more than he did for his first one (he's still walking up the steps without me having to lift his butt)!!! I'll get back later ... but again, thanks!!!

Gayle, I am so very sorry to hear. It is heart wrenching to see our babies go down hill. Maybe it's not DM and just some fluke thing that can be fixed with meds. Maybe it's naive for me to even say that but one can hope, right? Thinking of you and precious Slider. Hugs

Gayle, I am sorry to hear about Slider, though it sounds like there is some hopeful news. I know when I used acupuncture on myself, the effects were cumulative over time, so hopefully your boy will continue to improve.

Slider is doing somewhat better with his acupuncture. He graduated from twice a week to once a week treatments BUT he seemed to start going down hill after 5 days. We're going to try this week with only one session and if he starts having problems again he'll go back to two sessions a week.

He's having some gastric problems which his vet believes is being caused by his meloxicam. He takes 1/2 a pill a day in peanut butter. His acupuncture therapist wants me to give him breakfast BEFORE he takes his pill to see if this will help. Otherwise he'll have to take one on alternating days which I hate to do.

He's able to get up and down off the couch again by himself which is great news, goes up and down the dog ramp without me helping him, etc so I'm pleased with his progress. I haven't used the back part of his Help 'Em Up Harness and am thinking I can take his front part off since he's doing so well walking up the ramp. No, I'm not trying to fool myself that he'll get well, but as long as I can keep him comfortable and enjoying life I'll be happy.

I took this picture of my handsome Southern Gentleman playing with Ledgie's Yubba a couple weeks ago:

Gayle,
Glad to hear you are seeing improvement.

Have you considered a cart? You might want to introduce that now to help should his mobility decline again.

Middle ... I've been checking out carts on eBay ... saw one I liked and then my computer went on the fritz (off again/on again problem with my phone line) and I missed it. Money is really tight right now so I'm trying to save some via the "used" cart route ... but if he gets to the point he'll need a cart to get around then I'll break down and buy one retail.

Aw, so sorry you are dealing with so much.

You might want to check out handicapped pets.com. They often have used carts for sale. Also, I have seen a couple on shopgoodwill.com

Just be sure to check the shipping charges. The last one I saw looked almost new and went relatively cheap.

Gayle,
I got one on E-Bay - reconditioned from the outfit out of Bozeman MT. I went with them because of a board member's recommendation. I got the big wheels on it because they showed their dog tearing all over with those. Just keep stalking the sales - that's what I did.

Anyway, sooner is better than later. I waited to long to get the cart. I did sell it to another board member and her dog really took to it.

The cart does take some getting used to.

I'm sorry about the stomach upset, but glad to hear that he has some relief and is managing the ramp. I know that keeping up this level of care does hit the wallet...

For the joints, I've always had good luck with cetyl myristoleate. There is a common product out there called Celadrin, but I've always had good luck with Jarrow's True CMO. It does modulate the immune system, so if there is any DM going on, and IF it is autoimmune in nature (still not sure), it could help some.

Hang in there with your Southern Gentleman wub

Slider hasn't been doing well the past week. He started ass dragging, had a few hours of "walking on all fours" then started ass dragging again. I had to put the back of his Help 'Em Up harness back on to support his rear. I'm still looking for a used wheelchair. Have been checking out all the links suggested.

Poor boy also has a yeast infection in his right ear ... my vet thinks he might have gotten a drop or two of water in it when he had his bath at the groomers ... his left ear is fine.

His acupuncture vet taught me how to massage him which he likes.

Hope Slider gets his hindend mojo working again soon. I'd consider contacting Dogonewheels directly and ask about reconditioned ones.
I worry about you waiting too long because I did. I really regret not moving quicker on it or else bagging it and getting a stroller (they do make them GSD size.)

I'm sorry to hear Slider is having such a difficult time. I'm sure he knows how much you are helping him and how loved he is.

Glad the harness is helping.

My thoughts on a cart - I had a cart for Lady Jane. In fact - I'm pretty sure it was Middle's old cart from Dogonewheels. I would recommend a smaller, streamlined style of cart. The Dogonewheels was impossible to use in the house and we have a fairly open floor plan.
