Hi there,
Our Anna is partially blind. Tonight our other 3 chased a rabbit out of the yard (rabbit's new name is Lucky Bunny!) Anna was not out there with them as she's not integrated into the pack yet.
This made me wonder how I can help keep Anna safe if she decides to chase a rabbit in our fenced yard? It came to me that if she chases that rabbit and hits the fence on a dead run because she can't see it she could break her neck or be otherwise injured. Scary thought to say the least.
Any ideas how I can keep her safe from something like this happening?

Yes, she's only been here a couple of weeks. Was spayed on Monday so we have to keep her quiet until her stitches are out. Integrating her now could prove to be not good for her recovery. Hmmm, your idea is a thought. Would be pretty cool if it happened that one or more of the other dogs will become her little helper elf(s)  But I'd still like to have some ideas for until or even if that happens or not if anyone has any.

My suggestion would be to let her out and show her the boundaries and obstacles. Fence and trees, she'll learn them well. Please do not worry, only a very brief showing of the fence will be more than enough. When she is out alone, she has surely explored it herself. If it is a solid fence, she may actually see it well enough, even with limited vision. Take your time integrating her into the pack. Even blind people don't relax easily when walking near bouncy people (kids). Some dogs who have very little vision cannot live with other dogs comfortably, and the owners force the issue, and are surprised that their blind dog is now growly/bitey. However, Anna's vision may be better than you think, and she may be just fine gamboling about with your dear fur babies. Take it slow and see how they all do! Best of luck!

I wonder if you could hang a strand of lights along the fence, at least temporarily. Hang them low enough to easily be in her line of sight until she learns the boundaries.
Not sure about the trees, unless you could wrap the bases with something a light enough color to be easily seen. Something reflective maybe?
Just a thought.
Do you know yet what is causing her vision loss? Of course I immediately think of pannus. If her vision is not completely gone, medications may at least help her keep what sight she has.

I'm sure it's not Pannus or Glaucoma - there is absolutely not cloudiness to her eyes, they're clear as clear can be. Gracie came to us with Pannus and Anna's eyes don't look anything like Pannus. Pretty sure Anna has PRA/PRD I think are the acronyms.
Lights are a great idea except we have no electricity in the back yard to run them off of. Reflective something might just work. She can tell dark from light.

She learned the fence real quick, like right away. It's chain link. She wants to play with the other 3 real bad but it's way too soon. She lays by the gate that's between them so nice and calm most of the time. They sniff through the gate and a few times I've turned her around so the big kids could sniff her butt. Riley's given her his butt a couple of times, too. Other times she gets a little rambunctious but then I remove her because she doesn't need to rile them all up. Thank you for the good luck wishes!

I actually was going to mention sold lights in my original post but didn't since they would help only at dusk and dark. I guess I thought the help was needed for daytime as well when rabbits or other creatures could be running.  If solar lights are used, perhaps some type of reflective material could be hung from the wires to help give notice during the day? I'm watching here for ideas to pass on to others. Great topic and I love that you adopted her.

Do a search on Amazon for reflective tape. I just looked and they sell several, including the type used on emergency workers clothing.
That might be a cheaper, reliable way to mark the fence and trees. Should help day or night.

If the tape was hung loosely and moved whenever there was wind, she might pick up either on the movement or the reflective qualities.

Many people use an underground fence a few feet inside the main fence and set the collar to vibrate so she knows she is approaching the boundary. If she has limited vision I like the idea of tape.

Well, we tried the solar lights but they only give light for up to 8 hours. Since it's starting to get dark by about 4:30-5p this isn't gonna work. I'm going to take them back and try the reflective tape. It will also be nice not to have to pull the solar lights out of the ground and reposition them as the snow accumulates in winter nor to remove them to mow the lawn and have to put them back in.
According to a Google search "Rabbits are actually "crepuscular", meaning they are most active in the twilight hours of both sunrise and sunset."
But they seem to be in our back yard from 1a-5a for the most part. I guess nobody sent them the memo.

Going to try the reflective tape. Headlight is a nice idea but we don't wanna be messing with taking things on an off her to go in and out.
