So I'm struggling here.

Each year we go to the mountains in NC for a 9-day vacation. We go to a particular cabin because it's pet friendly, on about 20 acres and the whole family (us, the boy and the dogs) can enjoy it. But Mike and I had the conversation last night of if we should take Duncan this year?

To get into the cabin you have to go up a lot of stairs and the floors are hardwood--two things the old man at 16 is having a lot of trouble with. Mike is worried that it will be too much for him, which I can totally see. But my heart is torn on not taking him with us. We would either leave him with my parents or have someone come take care of him at the house.

I just don't know what to do. He went last year, and he couldn't go on any of our hiking adventures, but it's there where he had his first bout of vestibular disease. Since then, his legs are much weaker.

Does it make me a horrible dog mom to leave one of my kids??

Tiffany, You are not a bad mom. You do what is right and best for you aging guy. What I have learned the last few months is that it is hard to do what is best for our older dogs when it goes against what are heart feels.

I would love to have Cheyenne in the house with me all the time, but as 12+ years of age, she is fit, she is active and she is happy. Where she is and what she is doing is what is best for her, not the best for me. I really do enjoy watching her run around at her age, well not run flat out more of a lope, but I know in my heart that if I find a way to bring her in she will lose some of mobility.

So No you are not a horrible mom.

I think Duncan should have his very own vacation at home!!!! You could plan some very special activities for while your gone, things that he would enjoy. Things that come to mind would be a car ride smile and a trip to the 'magic window' (McDonalds or other drive thru) where he can get an ice cream or yummy treat.

You could leave a little present for him to open each day while your gone and just let him be spoiled by his Grandmama. Have a bandana day where everyone, including Duncan gets to wear a bandana!!!

If he likes chasing bubbles you can leave a can for your parents to blow for him. He doesn't have to run to catch them, its more about the interactions between him and your parents.

Have a day where he uses his nose to find treats. Perhaps your parents can take pictures of all the fun he had on his vacation.

I'm kind of thinking he might enjoy this more than struggling to walk on your vacation. Your not a bad Mom, we must always put their needs before that of our own. That's being a good Mom.

We just went through the same thing in May regarding our oldest dog, soon-to-be 13 yr old Golden, Willow. We go up to Acadia National Park annually where there is a lot of walking around, hiking trails, and getting into and out of the car, etc.

After much consideration, we decided to leave her with my mum. My mum happens to be Willow's favorite human and my mum adores her. They belong to the mutual admiration society! Willow had her own vacation...special time with her grammy. She also helped celebrate at a 90th birthday party, accompanied my mum while she worked a health fair, and got to swim at the beach. All of her favorite activities: grammy, new people, and swim-swim!

Even though we battled our emotions on it, we knew this was the best decision for her. We definitely missed having her. Myrika and Oakley did well without Willow and we were very grateful for that, as well.

We were very glad to see that she remembered who she blongs to when we came home, lol. She was excited to see us (rolled around and barked at us) and chased with her siblings.

I've got a better option for you wink There is a pet friendly cabin WE stay in in North Georgia on the NC/GA border that is VERY reasonable, 3 BD/2-1/2 BA, doggie doors, safe doggie fencing, a pond for swimming, and Duncan can stay on the ground floor. Let me know if you want the info. We LOVE the owners and have stayed there three times including our honeymoon. They are big dog people.

There is plenty of hiking around the area, waterfalls, and more. You can even hike right out the back of the property around the mountain the house is on. No pet deposits, and the deposit for vacation is 1/2 of your total stay.

This is a really tough one. I did take all of my seniors to the cottage with me every year, even when they had trouble getting around, even though the trip was hard on them. While we were there they did fine. They did have steps to negotiate and it was harder walking in the sand, etc. but they still enjoyed their visits. I had to leave them behind when I went on long hikes but I would take them on modified walks and they really enjoyed those.

However, if Duncan would be just as happy staying with your mom then that might be the best option. My dogs would not but then I have co-dependent dogs, lol.

We leave our very senior Cairn Terrier at home...mostly because she is 17 now and has never really enjoyed car rides. I don't really feel guilty because traveling is not on the top of her list of things to do.

Different, but similar is my boy Vigo. Vigo is really shy and does not enjoy things that involve strange people, so things we like to do...like visiting cool little towns, etc...are nightmarish for him. Instead of leaving him home, we've developed a system for waiting in the van with him when necessary. He really enjoys some parts of our vacations, so we balance it out for him wink

Thanks guys! I guess my biggest problem is admitting he's that old. frown deep down I know it will be hard on him this trip, and I know he won't hold a grudge, it's just hard to accept the truth.

I was talking to one of my friends tonight and they said they'd love to keep him for us. Good thing about Duncan, everybody loves him! So either they (which would be closer and a lot easier) or my parents will watch him.

Shel, I may check that place out later. This cabin is booked and paid for, so we're locked in it.

I need a nice place like this in the West!!! My great place, that was very reasonable, is no longer a rental frown

Tiffany, I'm really glad that you have a good place for him to stay if you don't take him. This whole thing might be harder on you than him hugging

Looks like no road trip for us this summer, but I'm hoping to still find a good place....

So far, we don't have the smoke, but I'm sure that the fires will be around here soon enough frown

I think you need to leave your dog where he's most comfortable and safest. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like taking him along is an option any longer which is very sad because I'll bet he loved going along. I would do whatever is the safest and most comfortable place for my dog to be. I actually probably would not go, but that's me and as my t-shirt says "Crazy Shepherd Lady ..." that would be me wink sometimes that's a literal statement about me wink

Owners are great, cabin books VERY quickly.

We found them by searching VRBO, geez, six years ago or so? Nice folks and dog-centric home smile

It's also where Grimmies learned he LOVES water though got freaked out when one of the bass in the spring-fed pond nibbled his toes.

I agree! We found our NC spot through VRBO and the couple always has their dogs with them when they are on the property. They also even ask "And the fur kids are coming too, right?" smile

My mom said she'd love to watch Duncan for us. In the end, I know it will be best for him. I'd hate for him to get hurt up there. I'll take him on a special hamburger run...or two. wink

NO ... YOU'RE NOT HORRIBLE!!! I know it's a heartbreaking decision to make, but IMHO Duncan (and you) would be better off if he stayed home (unless you can change your travel plans to a Duncan friendly area). I can't recommend which PLAN B is better ... taking him to your parent's house or having someone stay with him at your house ... I'd say whichever you believe will be less stressful for him.

goodluck HAVE A FANTASTIC VACATION ... HUGS TO DUNCAN!!!
