You know, the one that scares you because you are making noise and proximity and everyone else is moving and they are just laying there and finally you can relax yourself enough to see that they are actually breathing? That sleep.

Kramer, I believe started around 13, and the first time I saw it, I had a meltdown, because I didn't know it was a thing.

Annalise has been working up to it - she is always a good sleeper - and today she really was zonked to the point of me running to check on her. I mean, there are dogs barking, jumping, and she's sleep

I always guessed I got her at around 2 years old, which puts her at around 11.5, but don't have any idea for sure.

I wasn't sure if this was some kind of age milestone or if it varies greatly, or if only dogs who sleep deeply get to that point or what.

I do not believe Bella, at 12, has gotten me freaked out yet, prettttttty sure I'd remember! And I know I can sleep this way (my roommates in college said I slept like a mummy!) so nothing I am going to do about it other than stop bothering her. smile

Taking Mario to the vet for his yearly this week and will ask his vet, she's always good about questions like this but definitely wanted to hear from everyone here if they have thoughts! Thanks.

This is so odd as it happened to me yesterday!!!! I was passing out cheese and he was asleep in the living room. I put the cheese right up to his nose thinking that would wake him up...nothing.. I tired over and over and no response. Yes, I did check that breathing and had an awful thought for a moment, but he was breathing. I began stroking his face and finally he opened his eyes. He was still a bit out of it and not responding to the cheese. After a little while he smelled the cheese and took it.

Shiloh will be 11 years old in July.

Looking back, I think Tooz started to deep sleep like that around 11 and I think that is when her hearing probably started to go.

I think Rica started that kind of sleeping around 11-12 years old.

The, "are you dead or asleep" sleep? Sorry, I have a macabre sense of humour. I think it is connected to hearing loss. Massie started to lose her hearing when she was 10 and that's when she started sleeping like that. For Chama it was later, probably around 13 which is also when she started to lose her hearing.

Kailor is just starting to sleep like that and she is also starting to lose her hearing. She is in her 11s.

Sorry, it's really rough to watch them age. hugging

I agree about the hearing loss. When Rica started this she also was showing signs of hearing loss (which DH thought was "selective hearing" for a while until she stopped responding to keys being jingled for car rides laugh ).

I have really not noticed Kayos losing her hearing yet. But she does sleep deeply. She has always been a snorer so that is not a big deal. But just lately sometimes when we get up in the morning she is still in her bed.

Havoc and Mayhem sleep in our room. Kayos choses to sleep in her Kuranda in the kitchen. I have had to call her to get her up a few times over the last few months.

So maybe she does not hear the alarm go off? But she can still hear the neighbor open their door to let the dog out.

Kayos is 11 years and 4 months.

I also agree with the hearing loss which lessens their "alertness" and it takes a while for other senses to compensate (if they ever do) which explains why the smell of the cheese did not register immediately - I know myself when I'm in a deep sleep that I first incorporate distracting things into my dreams before I gradually realise it is something from the "real world"! grin

So, I don't think it so much a specific age thing more like a specific stage along the aging process. While the age this happens varies so does the order of the stages which can be different for each dog (or person for that matter)!

I just remembered the funniest story. Many years ago I agreed to take care of a neighbors dog while they were away. The dog was kept in a kennel outside. The first day I went over to feed the dog I found him lying 'dead' on the ground. You can imagine my terror!! I called his name over and over and no response. I hit the fence with something...again, no response. I just could not believe this was happening.

Slowly I got up the nerve to go check the body and nearly jumped out of my skin when the dog finally moved. The neighbors forgot to tell me the dog was deaf!!! No doubt he was also in one of these deep sleeps.
