I hope that the acupuncture and adequan help. Chiro always helps my dogs a lot too.

I got a second opinion for bear. This doctor said he wouldn't do the surgery until she was full grown and then he will max the weight at 50 lbs. Well bear is already 40 lbs. The only other option is to take her to an orthopedic specialist. I can only imagine what that bill will be. I don't know what else to do but take her there.

Did this vet discuss the three different main surgeries with you?

One probably really is cost. To me, the main question is whether or not you can afford two hip replacement surgies, each pretty pricey, and you can follow Cooper's thread to see what that entails.

If that is not something you can do (I couldn't), then you need to look at the other surgies and find a vet/specialist that knows all three well.

Thanks Lisa. She got her first Adequan shot this weekend. I'm really hoping it helps her. Couldn't get acupuncture until next week. I'm going to try a different glucosamine supplement as soon as I run out of Dasuquin.

Rafi gets:

InClover Connectin
Springtime Inc Longevity
Ester C
Springtime Omega 3-6-9 fish oil
Tumeric
egg shell liners

If I notice more stiffness or limping I switch out one of the top two for something different. I am often adjusting the combination of supplements and adding additional, where necessary. No one knows he has joint problems -- that's how well it works!

With Indy, I used to give Cosequin and the original glycoflex, and that combination worked great. The original glycoflex has alfalfa in it, which can be an allergen and might make some dogs bloaty, just as a warning. Indy did very well on it, as did other dogs that tried that combination. So, as with Ruth, you might have to mix and match to find the right combination.

I've had to stop my G&C supplements for awhile (allergy maybe), and developed all sorts of knee pain. I opted for some hyaluronic acid, and that has helped a ton. I'm using 2 capsules of the jarrow HA each evening (I have a history of knee issues).

I took bear to the specialist this week and got some bad news. frown The side that requires the TPO he will fix if he thought the other hip could sustain the weight of her body. The other side will require a full reconstruction. He won't do the reconstruction until she is full grown and he will not do the TPO side at full grown. Basically because both sides are bad, one being worse than the other, he won't attempt either. She is already in enough pain that she doesn't sleep well at all. frown

Oh, I am so terribly sorry to hear this! Please start another thread pleasejust about Bear's hip issues. Perhaps those more experienced with such things can offer guidance. I am so deeply sorry that Bear is in so much pain that she cannot sleep well. My compassion for what Bear and you are both going through. hugging I am sending Bear good thoughts.

Oh my gosh I am so sorry to read this. Is she on any medication for pain? I agree a new thread dedicated to this would be a good idea.

I'm a little confused as my Cooper (has now had two total hip replacements) but the first one he was only 14 months so certainly not fully grown at all.

And what did he say about FHOs? That sounds like the option here. There is still a weight bearing issue, but that way they can do the bad side first.

He didn't even mention the FFO's. There are only 2 surgeon's in GA that are specialists that come recommend. I guess my only option is to take her to another one.

Dexters 6 month X-rays. Not sedated. Thanks to another board started him on adequan, then glucosamine and fish oil. Using zeel if he looks a little stiff or has a long day running about. Not using any pain killers yet at 20 months old.
