Not really too surprising at all, as this isn't new. Besides, there are dogs bred to the standard for size-- but wildly out of the standard for off-the-charts extreme drive levels, or unusual color, or strange toplines, or whatever makes show/sport judges impressed nowadays. The pet crowd wants big, mellow teddybears. Each group of enthusiasts feel their type of GSD is the one closest to what a GSD "should be."

Sigh. Gallery of SV male winners, left column show winners ("Sieger" BSZS), right column performance winners ("Bundessieger", BSP): http://www.sensuroitu.net/GSD/2000.htmGSDCA show winners 1940 to now: http://gsdca.org/GSDReviewed/NationalResults2000Plus.htmThe German standard (SV, club of country of origin) is the FCI standard. As I understand, the GSDCA standard differs in some ways? But it's all just pieces of paper...

Liesje, that is so encouraging to hear! I've recently seen a couple of correctly sized, dry, and agile WGSL dogs without the Akita forehead, but had no idea how this type would fare in shows. Their backs were still a bit roached but everything else was beautiful (to my eyes), incl. great nerves.
When I had my 55 lbs Feli, a dry, agile, brilliant GSD, some people asked me whether she was a dwarf GSD!
Elly is about 72 lbs and might still fill out more. Dry, agile, incredibly fast runner, just on the very upper end in size for a female.

I have a 25", 78 pound female and I get a lot of remarks about her being a small GSD. She is on the long side so she looks/is slender and she glides when she trots.... which probably makes her look lighter(?) Too many moose out there disguised as GSDs I guess. I have to admit I do like large GSDs if they are in proportion and move well. But most of the bigger ones I see move like Huskies and have Akita heads.

Are German Shepherds being bred to standard which read agile and size and weight listed are 22 -24 "for bitches and 24-26" for males and weight is around 90lbs. I am seeing 120-125 oversized dogs. Anyone else question this? Which standard are you referring to? There is no weight given in the US one, I don't believe.
