As some of you know, Starine and I have been struggling with her battle against DM. I never gave up hope that it could be something else until recently, when the progression of this insidious disease makes it unmistakable. I still cannot, however, accept it and everyday I wonder where I will find the strength to get through this for her.

We took some video of Star today and while I find it very difficult to post my beautiful, talented girl publicly in her condition, I am doing it to make people aware of this disease. I believe that public awareness is the first step (albeit very small) in ending this disease in our breed.

I am so sorry Sandy hugging

I didn't want to watch the videos, but I did...

Starine is such a beautiful and noble girl, such a terrible disease process.

I feel your pain. I still, more than 2 years after losing Nyx, have not been able to post his final video and pictures. The video is especially difficult because I had my friend lay a final track for him. You could see his heart and brain were instantly in "work" mode but his poor body just would not cooperate.

She is gorgeous. My first GSD fell to DM. We mounted a battle but this disease is a nasty entity. Since Titan, I have seen too many more like your beautiful girl. Each time it is still such a shock. teary Hopefully the battle will be won one day.

I am sorry for you guys as it is heartbreaking.

Hugs to you and your beautiful girl. I am 99 percent sure that my dear sweet Shadow has DM as well. Watching your videos has pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Shadow is not knuckling as often as Starine is, but very very similar. Such a rough disease. Thank you though for sharing the videos, you are absolutely right. If people know what to look for then people can start trying to get it controlled sooner rather than later.

Thank you so much. However, the reality is that there is presently very very little that can be done to control it. Exercise is the best thing you can do and, possibly, anti-oxidants if the dog can tolerate it. Star hasn't been able to tolerate the anti-oxidants. But with both, the result may be only months of slowing the progression, not years. Star has been going to swim therapy once a week for the past 5 months and I think that is what has kept her on her feet as long as she has. We are going to look at a cart for her on Sunday, someone nearby has a new one that is Star's size for sale (due to very unfortunate circumstances). Hopefully, it will fit her.

I don't anticipate a cure for DM in my lifetime. I believe the avenue to controlling it in the GSD lies in responsible breeding and education on the part of the consumer. Star was a rescue, I pulled her from AC when she was less than 1 yo, so I can't research her lines unfortunately.

Thank you for posting it. I know how hard it is to watch and see but hopefully it will help another dog somewhere someday. I did not fully understand what it looked like until seeing the videos. Knowing what to look for in our own dogs may help someone catch it sooner and have more options to at least try to hang on for a few more precious months.

That was hard to watch, especially knowing how dynamic she was a few years ago in the agility ring.

I also watched Greta (another GSD that was shown on the list on Star's youtube thread) in her wheelchair and she did very well with it. I hope the chair fits Star.

Sandy, that is difficult to watch but really educational too. Would be great for general practice vets to see.

Handicapped Pets now has a cart that doesn't need to be specially fit. http://handicappedpets.com/www/index.php...rent-works.html

Thank you and Star. hugging

There is no pain with DM. So Star wants to chase her tennis ball and go on walks, while her body fails her. It will continue to progress and soon she will completely lose the use of her back legs. She will become incontinent and it will progress to her front legs, yet she will remain mentally alert. At some point we will have to make a decision and that is the day I cannot think about.

Yes, that's Walkin' Wheels. We were trying to decided between Eddie's Wheels and Walkin' Wheels when I saw the ad for the Eddie's Wheels cart nearby. It's brand new and still in the box, but they're selling it at a discount. Their dog died a few hours after it was shipped and it coudn't be returned.

Barb, yes I did. Everything except the diet. Got the supplements from WestLab. I didn't see any improvement and gave up because I couldn't control the diarrhea that came with it. One of the neurologists that Star saw, who did her residency under him, felt that the acetylcysteine was the part of the protocol that was the most useful. Unfortunately, there are no scientific studies to support the protocol and everything is anecdotal. That's what I got from the two neurologists that Star saw.
