We are GSD owners and we all know how strong and quick these guys can be. So from time to time our dog(s) do something that results in an injury to us. Share your story. It doesn't have to be GSD's any breed.

I can't remember exactly when it happened, I was leaning forward to put collar on or something and sweet DeeDee popped up and hit me in the face with her head and some how I bit through my lip. Painful, bled A TON and didn't heal up all that fast.

Wheee! What a great topic Val, I finally get to be an expert on something! rofl And yikes, that must have really hurt badly, to bite through your own lip! shocked

Grimm:

1. Has gleefully knocked one of my front teeth loose, when he brought his head up forcefully as I brought my head down.

2. Wrinkle in my left retina, permanent, Grimm's puppy exuberance while being groomed in a field.

3. Concussion in Germany when Grimm dragged me down a street into a lamp pole when he saw another dog.

4. Chips of broken cartilage and bone in R knee when Grimm yanked me happily over a small cliff when we lived in the mountains.

5. Bone out of place in spine, likely due to "Hock-Downs." This is when Grimm blasted right through my knees from behind to chase a pinecone someone kicked for him, flipping me to fly then land HARD, flat on my back. (Grimm gets IN THE ZONE when someone has a ball.... VERY hard to get people to understand that they should NOT play ball with Grimm near where other people are standing/sitting)

All of Grimm's issues are merely sins of enthusiasm, but his intensity, power, and lack of awareness when focused on play or a dog, means his enthusiasm becomes dangerous.

How timely.

My right knee, my poor unhappy knee was wrenched while sleeping on the day after Karma was born, January 30. Two weeks ago, I finally realized that I could go up and DOWN (much worse), with one foot on each step. Yay!

Last saturday in class Karma whipped around to look at something behind her and crashed her back end into my right knee. A stream of minor explicatives escaped as I avoided going down. And all week it has been rather yucky.

Today, in class once again, the little bitch swung into it again, and I'm sorry, but I said, "JESUSCHRISTDOGMYKNEE!" She only weighs 49 pounds. My older girls have 30 pounds on her, and they aren't pounding my knees at every opportunity.

She's lucky I like her.

Some of the others have done damage as well:

Whitney was jumping up onto a dog shelter as I was reaching down for her ball, and we connected forehead to forehead. My legs went rubbery and my stomach was sick. I did not go down. Whitney did not eat for two days.

Milla did something similar, and her eyeballs went all red and bloodshot. I took her to the vet and explained what happened, and the vet was more concerned with me than her, she said she only sees dogs in auto accidents like that.

I put my hand in between Arwen and Rushie, and got what I deserved, stitches, ER, and a nice little scar. I removed the bloody stump and went to my SUV, pointed it at them and drove right up to them. It startled them enough for them to stop, and I whipped out of the car. Arwen ducked beneath, and I lifted all eighty pounds of Rushie into a crate in the back before he realized what happened. Then Arwen loaded up and I took them over to Dad's and had him help me check them over before getting them home and heading off to the ER.

I shoved my leg out between Arwen and Jazzy after they decided they no longer liked co-habitating. I have a good scar on my calf from that, and that was about 10 years ago. It took a year to heal.

I have a couple of scars on a few fingers from my first GSD.

All in all though, I think I have been pretty fortunate with injuries. I do wish that knee would heal already though, and I wouldn't keep leaving it in Harm's way.

I've bumped heads, been plowed into and knocked down, and pulled over but all without injury. The most painful thing I have ever had happen was from me holding a stick for Niko to chew on and he chomped my finger. It crushed the fingernail, hurt like a son of a gun, and bled copiously.

Patti, I think you win the prize though! That is an impressive list wow

Lumps on my head from head bumps.
Swollen lip from head bump.
Face plant because she stopped dead in front of me while jogging.
Stitches in my hand from her landshark days. (tough time coming
up with a story so I couldn't say 'my dog did it')
She's worth it.
To steal from Chet and Bernie: she's always the smartest dog in the room

I've been pretty fortunate with Risa. Even so, I have not gotten away unscathed!

The first injury she caused was a sprained left shoulder. She was playing on a long line with her corgi friend and she hit the end of it at full speed. In my infinite wisdom, I had the loop of the leash around my wrist which made it so I couldn't let go. My shoulder went "pop." Not fun. There is no easy way to rest an injury like that but, thankfully, it was only a minor sprain!

She also gave me a nice set of bruises on the hand when I went to throw her frisbee. Ris jumped up right as I was tossing it and my hand collided with her mouth. Ouch!

And her most recent one took place about a month ago when we were laying in bed on a Sunday morning. I was petting her and she was happy and excited. She swatted me with her paw and caught me in the eye. Minor corneal abrasion. Had to take antibiotic drops to prevent an infection. . .and I'm not good at taking drops!!

Over 7 years. . .that's not tooooo bad. smile

Yukon has been pretty good to me. With him it's mostly missing his toy and biting my arm instead or a busted lip.

Many of the more painful injuries come from past dogs.

A fractured ankle when my Golden decided to weave between my legs while going down stairs. My leg went one way, ankle the other. That left me limping for 2 weeks.

I have two dime sized scars on my palm when my Golden ran full speed to meet her beloved boyfriend. She got to the end of the 26ft flexi lead and I went down hard onto the cement parking lot. I think it was then that I realized flexi leads are crap.

I also now have a deviated septum thanks to all the head on collisions I've been in with various dogs.

I think I've blocked all the injuries from Max out of my memory! I will say that he contributed quite a bit to my chiropractor's house payment wink

What a great topic!

Let's see.......

Lucky never injured me. Good girl! smile

Wolf - I threw his ball under an evergreen tree and he could not find it. He was not real bright. So I crawled under the tree and got it. He dove in too and wacked me in the head. I saw stars - really. Ouch!

Max - the list is long. I had not had him long, we were out walking and two dogs came after us, one from each side of the street. He spun to see them both and as he crossed in front of me I fell over his leash. I broke my nose, banged my head on the street, broke my glasses and my knees oh my knees! I sustained handle bucket tears on my meniscus. One day may need surgery but so far so good. I was bruised from me thighs to my ankles for 6 weeks. Dislocated hubby's shoulder twice. Drug me down a hill after a cat. It was a shale hill. I still have some embedded in my leg. Kayos did help him.

Kayos - aside from the cat on the hill, nothing else.

Havoc - I think have permanent divots on my arms from agility and him grabbing me.

Mayhem - well, she broke my glasses last night. My fault, I was on the floor rough housing with her and she knocked me in the head. I ma wearing my spares and not doing very well with them I am afraid.

I've been knocked down a time or two -- my first dog would judge one's speed while walking very acurately -- just best not to alter your speed with him because he wouldn't recompute, but hit the back of the calves a glancing blow, knocking the human target on his or her keester.

The funniest one was when I released the late Barker the Younger from a heel excercise, began running and called her to me. She came, (she was a tank!), I tripped over her, got a knot on my forehead and an increible black eye, a lump or two on my torso and some on my legs. Only a few people at work asked what had happened or made any remark about it at all. That was the funniest part.

I did something stupid and was bit by accident (I wasn't the target - I got in the way).

The youngster threatened to take out my knees & has managed to screw them up by pushing backward. But all in all not nearly as impressive as these stories!

Fracture in left pinky when Baron ran over to a Golden in a training class and I had hold of his leash (improperly as it seemed to turn out!) and the leash tightened HARD around the little digit. Couple of weeks to heal but no problem with it!

The summer of 2011 I was walking down a forested slope with Chamsa and a friend- friend threw balll for her dog down the slope in front of me - Chamsa, never one to miss the opportunity of chasing a ball came running at speed out of nowhere and smashed into my left side - wrist bone shattered. I had an operation and a bery frustrating 6 weeks in cast as I am left handed.

Fast forward the end of the summer - wrist has just healed and I decide to take Chamsa to a German Shepherd training group. Chamsa was spooked straight away by all the well trained but poorly socialised dogs ! Two minutes into training she bolts - unfortunately my finger caught in the lead and snapped - yes, you guessed it - left hand again. Back to surgery, same surgeon!

This finger did not heal well and now does not work too well - a constant reminder to trust my instinct because as soon as I walked into the group and saw Chamsa's reaction to it i knew I should have turned around and taken her home!

A lot of bruises and a few scars. Treue put a nice full bite on my inner thigh when I went to kick a sleeve. I ended up canceling a physical since I wasn't going to try to explain that. eek My worst injuries are from horses and even then only some skull x-rays and scars.

Thanks, Pan! lol I now have an ugly scar. After I removed the stitches, this wound looked more like a bad burn (the scar also looks like a deep burn scar). There was also a really deep puncture on my palm side which hurt a lot more but was not stitched since you let punctures drain. The bite was HARD so my whole hand and wrist swelled and were wrapped for about 2 weeks to immobilize it. On the whole, not that bad.

I was bit in the face by a GSD when I was 2, don't have any of those photos scanned.

I also had a long line burn my heel, holy crap that one hurt!

Oh, and the first week I had Indy she muzzle punched me and I had to get my front tooth repaired.

I had a shoulder with 3 spurs on the end of the upper arm bone...
one day I was tossing a nerf football to the water, standing on an incline to the water, left side up, Hugo took off after thrown ball, leasch caught my sandal, lifting
the left leg, I fell on my shoulder...the spurs punched into the rotator cuff. It hurt a but, but I went swimming too in cold water, felt a bit better but upon waking the next morning, I couldn't move my arm.
Ended up with surgery, months of PT, and still, 5 years later, must keep up the torture myself to keep that shoulder strong and flexible, without too much pain.
It reminds me every once in awhile, but for the most part is OK.

Hmmm, many!

Pup missing stick I was throwing and got hand -- emergency room.

various nips and rips and rope burns (still have scars) from when long line wrapped around ankle when pup chased a ball.

I think I have a bump or scar from every pup - all well worth it!

The worst that has happened from my own dog was a some watering eyes, a bit lip, and one time she jumped up during left finish and clacked my teeth together so hard that I saw stars. She has nipped me and ripped a few pairs of pants when I was teasing her with a toy. Going for the toy, she has nailed my hand a bunch of times but nothing terrible. I do have pictures of a bad bite I sustained from someone else's dog but none from my own.

No time for details but:

1). my friend's dog broke my nose.

2). my foster dog mistook my hand for a stick and bit me.

3). Basu took off after something while attached to a 20 foot line (and me) and I did a full somersault, landed on my feet, held onto the dog and ended up with the mother of all rope burns.

4). Massie repeatedly ripped my pants open with the giant tree branches she liked to carry around (an injury to my clothing!).

5). all of the above

I'm sure there are lots more but that's a start. Can you tell I've been writing midterms for the past week? wink

I feel your pain Ruth...have a paper due on Wednesday and I just started it about an hour ago and have a midterm exam on Thursday. The good news is that we are half way through the semester already!

Well, not quite the same pain: I have to write (as in create) the midterms (and other assignments) and then grade them. And then start all over again for the next round. So multiply you by 75 (the total number of students I have this semester) and then you would feel my pain. wink

Did I mention my most recent painful animal injury? Gio took off after a bird and I stepped on his tie-out with my foot (to stop him) and ended up with a nasty rope burn. This was 4 months ago and there's still a red mark!

Injuries I remember getting from other dogs while protecting mine:

Full bite on the thigh from a chow. From behind a corner Cora the dog aggressive chow emerged off leash and immediately kick started for Bubi who happened to be right next to me. In a flash I scooped up Bubi and got the full bite intended for her. Full jaw deep bruises deep down in the tissue, took a long time to heal. Where the canines had sunk in wasn't nearly as bad, that healed quickly.

Partially torn knee ligament from a Rottweiler charging at Feli. Idiot had a rottie on a 6' leash. Idiot let rottie charge at Feli with full leash on an outstretched arm. Walkway with fences on both sides, so smart Feli couldn't move out of his reach. Soccer player me kicked out leg in rottie's way. I took a major blow but softened it for geriatric and fragile Feli who was pushed into the fence which luckily had some give. Bullying, not biting. It's amazing how much torque the 100 lb or so beast got out of a standing position. Idiot got away before I was able to get up. Reported the incident but he was never sen there again. Physical therapy, weeks of gimping. Oh, those knees... Would have gotten me about 15k in court my lawyer friend said.

And oh the knee hits...

Does poison ivy count?

David walked Mars early one morning and when they returned, Mars woke me by licking my whole face. Little did I know that he waded in poison ivy and then cleaned his coat. My face became so swollen I was embarrassed to be in public, but I had to see a doctor for a cortisone shot.

A scar on my left knee from tripping over puppy Dago when we were running on a dirt road. Had so much dirt deep in the wound...

My hands and arms were all colors of the rainbow when my beloved Robin was a puppy. We got beyond it and no scars left.

Tanja jumped over the back seat in my rather bare bones Datsun station wagon. A pin that stuck out caught her and held her left hind leg between bone and tendon, and she was caught in mid jump. She panicked and snapped frantically trying to get at what gripped her leg. I unhooked her poor leg and she accidentally got the tip of my elbow. Ouchie spot, but nothing lasting. She didn't even know she had gotten me. And no injury to her leg, whew.

Years of wear and tear on my shoulders from handling young, powerful, untrained dogs, and from climbing trees. Right shoulder gave four years ago, torn ligament, surgery. This summer a bunny popped out of the bushes a few feet in front of Elly with the crazy prey drive. That pull was the finishing touch to my left shoulder's rotator cuff, partially torn. Orthopedic surgeon hopes to fix it without surgery, woohoo! And Elly has since controlled herself with those pop out bunnies, loose leash at all times, woohoo!

And of course rope burn, like everyone else. Decorative scar above the heel from a rope snaking around my feet while Elly learned recalls under distraction.

Two cat bites.
One from a foster cat, an overprotective mom aka attack demon. We could only go into the room armed with thick knee high wellies, plus sporting an apron with a front pocket as holster for a spray bottle. Both were tested multiple times. She became extremely sweet with people once her kittens were weaned.
And one from Little Orca who got out at 6 am before my coffee, chased by puppy Elly, fled on top of my 6' high fence. She is my wild child, nobody would be able to catch her once she was out and about. I had to be fast reaching up to get her by the scruff, scruffed a bit too far down and she nailed my hand in her panic. I carried her inside by the scruff, no letting go. My cat, my mistake, my bite. She had no idea she had nailed me, and was very attached to me during the next few days, I guess b/c she felt I had rescued her.

All nothing compared to what Patti, Kathy, and others had. Yikes!

Dante:
At a local park working on down in motion and recalls. He FLEW to me on the recall and as he started to sit we both discovered the ground was very slick and he slid right into me throwing me on my butt. It was a long walk home with a very muddy/wet backside!!

I had the tug tucked under my left arm as we worked on healing with attention and he got a little excited, jumped to grab it and grabbed my breast instead. OUCH!

Kaos:
I was standing in the kitchen and she ran into the back of my legs. I had that wonderous slow motion effect as I ran through my brain how I was going to get to a phone with at least one broken wrist and possibly two and/or a back injury. Luckily no broken bones and I was just a little sore for awhile.

My worst injuries happened with horses
Bucked off and landed on my head and arm, was unconscious for 70ish hours and right arm was broken. I have amnesia of it, only thing I remember is it was a Sunday.
Got the cast off after 9 weeks and the next day was jumping on a friend's horse and went over the other side and landed on the same arm. Sprained.

Horse stomped on my right foot (I was wearing boots) and fractured my foot.

Jumping my horse over some bales of hay and he jumped REALLY big and I wasn't prepared and off I went. Luckily I had a helmet on (This was years ago before people wore them regularly like they do now) head hit a rock and cracked my helmet but not my head, I just had my bell rung.

Dog comes over to me on sidewalk and licks face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, we humans are just so clumsy. We play really screwy too. My pups think that if I am on the floor/ground, it has to be for something really fun.

They are just encouraging us to use all four appendages on the ground! We'd possibly be a little less clumbsy if we hadn't started trying this upright nonsense...

I have a new one thanks to Kaos

Rule is no leaving crate until I give the word and of course she pushes this often.

A little back ground on Kaos - when she's really excited or frustrated she wants something in her mouth.

So she started out of her crate before I released her, I pushed my hand toward her to block her way and at the same time she opened her mouth looking for something to put in it.
Well what happened is I jammed my thumb into her canine tooth which slid between the nail and nail bed. I'm hoping I don't have a permanent separation there (happened to a friend of mine after something was jammed under her fingernail) though I don't think I'm going to lose the nail since it's not all the way down.

It has at least today stopped throbbing

Oh my. Ouch All I can say beyond that is I want to forward this thread to Dr. in Arkansas who was rather askance at my rather piddly list of animal related wrecks. All you all make me look unscathed.

Milla went into my bad knee today. Why do they target my bad knee? And her head is like a sledge hammer! Do they really have to have concrete skulls and then target this whimpy knee all the time?

My dogs will never hurt me with any form of human-aggression, but they may just kill me.

Oh my, Barb. I hope it doesn't get infected! Anything underneath the nail is high risk. If there is any pain left, please see a doc right away and get abx.

I had an infected nail bed as a teenager. The entire nail had to be removed under anesthesia. Then the infected nail bed had to be cleaned once a day. It was torture!!!!

This deserved its own reply

shocked x 1,000,000!!

I had my entire right toenail removed and it was a....well way more painful than I had anticipated having had the sides of my toenails removed multiple times. I can't imagine if it had to be cleaned every day.... sick there isn't an appropriate pain emoticon dude but it does almost make me sick to my stomach to imagine

Somedays you should really just stay in bed.

Like today.

Ok, they are not ALL dog-related.

I had procrastinated for a while this morning, and finally when I went out, Tori who has been on Novox since Monday, isn't better and is now pooping hard poop with blood in it. Ick. So I decided (nice day) to put her outside in a kennel where she can rest on the wood shelter floor, instead of on the concrete in my room where I had her. So I moved them around so she could be back in her area, and went in to call the vet and ask how to proceed with the meds, and came back out and slipped and fell on the concrete. Both knees, one bloody, the other scraped, the bloody one has a lump on my leg, my left shoulder is hurting, and my right elbow scraped. The scraped knee is the bad knee and that is smarting worse than the bloody knee. Nice.

So after many explicatives, and managing to get up on my my knees and then onto my feet, I went about finishing the work. I let Jenna and Karma in the field while I did there kennel. Darn! I forgot to give them their food. Ah well, I put them back in, and I let Joy out in the field, and I noticed some hair tufting on her butt, so I called her over and I am pulling it out, and she swung her head around up under my arm and then went to look at my face. Only my chin was there looking at her butt, and her head exploded my lower jaw, crashing its teeth into my upper teeth, and giving my quite the head ache.

Lovely. For some reason my back is hurting too.

And so I drove to my sister's sat for an hour on 480 -- usually ten minutes, got the kids, and then one of the aunties wanted me to come to the grocery store with them for the other auntie's b-day stuff. So we went there. And then she wanted me to help pick up all kinds of stuff for some doing, and she managed to push a cart filled with 4 cases of water into my left heel.

Aaaaargh!!! I know she thinks I am the biggest baby, but my body feels like I fell out of an airplane right now. Ok, maybe more like when I totaled the car.

And it is going to be even more sore tomorrow.

I should have stayed in bed.

Nail is good, only hurts now if you press it quite hard, which of course I do every once in awhile to see how much it hurts rofl though it does appear at this point there may be a small tooth shaped area of separation, it will be interesting to see how (if) that grows out over time

So glad your nail is ok, Barb! Phew.

My nail injury decades ago was at least not related to dogs, at least as far as I can remember. Back then and as kids/teenies we were likely more capable of bearing pain back then b/c we had to! Today, if a dentist would drill without numbing, I'd probably bite! But back then, that's what it was. Some things change for the better!

Poor Selzer, you sure took the hits yesterday!

Ah, you mentioned ribs? Last year I bruised mine twice when out with youngster Elly, once it was a trip to the ER.

First one I was running with leashed Elly in the woods, never fast enough for her and too fast for me, sigh. Wearing progressives I don't always see what is underfoot. I tripped over a root or rock and whamm! slammed without reflex on jagged rocks. It took what seemed like a long time before I was able to get up. I didn't go see a doc, they don't tape ribs anymore, and it didn't feel like I had soft tissue injuries. Just weeks of dull pain. ugh. Maybe Elly was the last large pup I raised...

Then in the early am, not my most alert time, Elly and I out on a soccer field. Another dog, a misunderstanding between Elly and me, and I slammed against the goal post. I knew, the ribs again.

Three days later I had to sneeze and that sent me to the ER. I couldn't breathe and the pain had me I don't know where. At the ER they x-rayed and gave me narcotics. The pharmacist recommended a rib belt in case I had to sneeze again. That thing took away most of the worry of another sneeze and knock out. I needed it. All good now. Pup is maturing, phew.

Oh, it's all better than sitting at home and letting life pass by smile

Been gone for a while and just saw this so thought I'd add:
At 11 months, Max got spooked while on a walk and turned to investigate the scary thing and his back end hit me in the back of the knee just as I started to take a step - ended up with a broken arm and major street cred with the pack of 5 year old munchkins we met on the way back home - my elbow had clipped a rock so it was bleeding and they were totally impressed that I was bleeding and not screaming for my mom. OK, yes, I was screaming for her in my head.

At 20 mo: My dad doesn't have a fenced yard so Max is on a zip line from one end of the yard to another since he wanders if not watched. Max is usually pretty good about the line if you go out to see him but one day he got a case of the zoomies while on the line and close-lined me when I was turning to see where he was. I went flying and landed flat on my back. I evidently hit hard since is shattered the plastic claw clip in my hair and knocked the wind out of me. I thought Max was upset about the fall but I landed on his ball and he couldn't get it.

Last spring (he's now 2 1//2), he met a real pretty and friendly greyhound. Max is a licker when he smells something new and interesting. SHE did NOT appreciate the fact he was getting too friendly and licking what she considered personal space and after a growl which he ignored, she snapped at him (perfectly acceptable IMO - NO means NO). Max jumped back with only a clipped ear and his elbow slammed into my shin. Words not permitted in a family setting did escape but no broken skin, just a HUGH bruise. I was at the tail end of my winter dose of aspirin so the bruise formed quickly. 2 weeks later, I was in the hospital with cellulitus getting massive quantities of antibiotics.

The consensus at work is that the dog is trying to kill me.

Well lets see, Kitana has caused me to get bite when her and Raz the shepherd mix I had to get rid of attacked Casper the Husky mix my mom had. I got bite by him when my hand got too close to his mouth trying to get them off of him, he did not realize it was me that he bite, he just clamped on whatever was closest at the time. It swelled up and was black and blue for about a week or so, I told everybody that ask that I injuried it on the farm, did not want to tell them it was a dog bite.
Then she close-lined me once cause the neighbor threw her ball and I was in the way, lifted me right out of my slippers, luckly I landed back on my feet minus the shoes.
Other then that I am pretty lucky, my mom is the one that always gets hurt by the dogs, I am the one that gets hurt by the horses. I have been bucked, kicked, bite and stepped on several times when we was training them, now not so much which is good cause I do not bounce like I use to LOL.

This thread makes me so happy! My friends all thought I was a nut when I came to work all torn up.

This is the best one so far: I stuck out a hand to stop her from running into me during a recall. Fat lot of good that did me!

Yesterday, I was bending over filling Heidi's dish and she suddenly raised her head smacking my lower jaw, giving me an instant headache, and hurting all my lower teeth. Bad girl! Actually, I should've been more careful, ya know, protect yourself at all times, constant vigilance!

German shepherd heads are like concrete blocks. My dogs will never hurt me on purpose, but they will kill me by accident.
