This will eventually be a sticky that focuses on different antibiotics, both drugs and herbals, when I get time to set it up.

For now, I wanted to have a place for this link:

In pneumonia, treating a secondary bacterial infection with an anti-viral can increase survival:

Can Long-term Antibiotic Treatment Cure Autoimmune Disease?

...Doxycycline has been used successfully against chlamydia and mycoplasma in combination with Ciprofloxacin when treating victims of Gulf War Illness, where patients were found to have chronic mycoplasmal infections (2). In this case, Doxycycline (a broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts by preventing micro-organism protein synthesis) was used in combination with Ciprofloxacin (a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis). These antibiotics were administered in six-week cycles, with two-week breaks, during which Augmentin was taken; in most cases doctors found that patients required four to six treatment cycles before blood tests were negative. Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, interferes with bacterial protein synthesis, and was used in cases where Doxycycline could not be tolerated, or where it had become ineffective. Clarithromycin, another macrolide, also interferes with protein synthesis, and this is also effective against a broader range of bacteria.

David Wheldon, a Cambridge microbiologist, claims to have had success using a similar combination to treat chlamydia pneumoniae infection and MS (multiple sclerosis). His regimen consists of building up treatment to a twice-daily dose of Doxycycline, thrice-weekly doses of Azithromycin, and "pulsed" cycles of Metronidazole. He particularly warns against treatment length being too short; stating that typical two to six week treatments with one antibiotic alone is likely to drive the bacteria deeper into a persistent state....

Mycoplasma and Autoimmune Disease

The cause of most autoimmune diseases are unknown, and scientists suspect that they may have multiple origins. However, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that chronic infections may play a significant role in both autoimmune and degenerative diseases. These infections may help to cause the disease, which continues after their disappearance, or they may act as co-factors in the disease process, or they may be opportunistically "tagging on" to the autoimmune or degenerative disease, increasing sickness and complications....

...One particular type of bacteria that is coming under increasing scrutiny for its possible role in autoimmune and degenerative disease are mycoplasma. These bacteria were first found to be associated with autoimmune disorders in the 1970s (3). Mycoplasma are "stealth bacteria" living inside human cells, that are known to be able to migrate from a disease site to other areas of the body, causing additional disease....
