Blaze is in a puppy training class that they call an AKC star puppy class. At the end there are certain things the trainers checks off and if your dog passes you can pay $10 for the title of AKC star puppy plus you get a certificate with medallion. Curious if any of you would pay $10 for this? It's only $10, but if everyone in my class did it, AKC gets maybe $120 and if every class did that they stand to make a fortune, which might not be a bad thing, just not sure, so thought I'd ask.

No. I think this "title" is a waste of time. It is not a title or even a temperament certificate, it just says the puppy passsed a very simple test. It is not a bad thing, it gives credence to your training, but to me, it is not worthy of 10 dollars.

I have one. It isn't a title. But it was the newest fad when Joy was a puppy so instead of offering puppy class, they offered the star-puppy class. Actually, I cannot remember exactly what parts could have been more difficult for some dogs than the CGC, some of the way they did some of the stuff, but we did not actually take a test at the end of the class, they checked off each of the items during the different class sessions. Oh and we had to write papers on what our breed was originally bred for, and an exercise schedule or something like that. It was 4 years ago almost so I can't remember exactly. But I have the cert.

I did not feel it a total waste of time or money. I enjoyed the class.

Class is fine, I was in one with Lydi, but I still would not pay an extra 10 for the paper.

No, I probably wouldn't. I see nothing wrong with doing so. Just my preference. I would (and have) paid for the CGC. But that's a bit different, imho. Especially considering my dog. smile

With my buyers I provide brochure for the puppy S.T.A.R. as well as the CGC from AKC. I feel that it does provide an incentive for the buyers to attend classes with their puppy and although it is not a HUGE accomplishment it does provide some measurable training being done and may spark further training interest. $10 is a small fee I believe.

Like Kathy, our class has been great, and I would take it again, just curious how others felt about buying the certificate. . .

I am not a fan of the AKC, as I don't think that they really have the health of the breeds in their best interests in many of the actions that they take. For that reason, unless there is a good reason to support them, I would choose not to.

However, if it helps with homeowner's insurance, etc., or if it just feels neat to have, $10 isn't a lot of money.

We are willing to pay it as it is documentation to show our insurance. He, our Neeko, naturally flubbed his Star puppy test on Monday because of his issue with staying put, but eventually he will get it done.

I know that our insurance will cover him once he gets his CGC and our agent said they'd put a copy of his Star puppy completion in our records as it does show that he is being trained and can work around other people and dogs.

It's important to us, being military, that our dog be accepted wherever we are transferred to in the future since some military installation have placed GSDs and Malanois (sp?) on their banned breed list. I won't even get started on the stupidity of those lists! But, at least if he's covered by our insurance we would have less issue renting in a town where we cannot/will not live on base because his breed is banned.

I wouldn't pay for it, but I don't think it's a bad thing. The only difference (to me) between this and a graduation certificate for completing a six-week course is that you're paying an extra ten bucks for the AKC's imprimatur. To the extent that AKC affiliation is more likely than an unaffiliated program to at least make people vaguely aware of agility, Rally, obedience, tracking, etc., that's a good thing in my mind.

I tend to view things like this as stepping stones to encourage new owners to pursue greater achievements with their dogs. I think it's great for a new owner to be proud of having a STAR puppy. It shows that they've done more with their pup than the average owner does -- most people don't go to ANY training classes, not even a basic six-week course at PetSmart -- and that deserves a little recognition. And if it encourages them to get involved in more advanced training, or dog sports, even better!

STAR might not mean much if you're already a performance or working-dog addict with an eye on advanced titles and certifications. But the general dog-owning public isn't there yet, and so I am all for having as many gateway drugs as possible to the wonderful world of dog sports.

I do not pay for the STAR certificate or whatever you get after passing the test, but I go on to train my dogs to much higher titles. For pet folks I think it's a nice thing! At the place where I trained, the beginner puppy class did a STAR test on the last day, but we did a lot of other stuff too. Nikon and Pan both did it and I didn't pay because they went on to earn CGC, BH, Schutzhund titles... It didn't exist yet when we got Coke (and he wasn't a puppy) but I did pay for his CGC certificate because I knew it would likely be the highest "title" he ever earned and for him, it *was* hard work!

Hi greet

From a 1st time GSD puppy owner - -

We will be taking the AKC Star Puppy test later in the fall....I fully understand it is not that big of a deal and kind of an AKC gimmick, but it makes me feel good about what we have accomplished with our five month old puppy to date and the $10 would be worth it to me. It's not a goal in and of itself but a little shout out for we have reached with her training so far. Think she could pass it now but we will do it closer to when she takes her CGC test.

We have always had dogs but Rika is our first GSD and it has been super important to us to get her off to a good start with the training, socialization and bonding. Her classes and behavior work sure will not stop with this AKC Star "award".

I think that makes a lot of sense Teri. Some of it is also what trainers you have around and what they participate in.

I think that the training is a big deal and important, and the cert a fun symbol of your accomplishment smile
