Thoughts? I see that you can actually get Interceptor through Walmart's pharmacy with a prescription from your vet. Are we certain the source of the medications Walmart is getting?

I really would like to go back to Interceptor for heartworm preventative (neither of the vets Risa sees carries it) but I know Novartis will only cover treatment if your dog gets heartworms anyway while on their preventatives if you've purchased it from a vet. I also worry that it might not be the correct medication though I think that's probably less of an issue since it's a national chain.

What do you think? Would you feel comfortable getting medications for your dogs from Walmart?

Thanks.

I agree, Interceptor as we know it is no longer being produced, so how on earth are they selling it??

Would like to know that too!

Have they been contacted to find out if they actually have it? It might be old stock? My Interceptor here that is almost empty has an expiration date of 1/14.

No, I would not trust Walmart for medication. I go back to the story the gentleman told who visited the local Quilt Guild of which my mother and several Aunts are members, his company produced material, sold in material shops, quilt shops and Walmart. He said Walmart came in and said they would buy all their seconds, their lots with dye runs, improper colour. He cautioned the quilters to not buy material from there, that it was not for serious sewers, no matter how inexpensive it seemed. And this was a person doing business with them.

I know when I was waiting for gall surgery, the rice cakes I bought at Walmart, tasted different than the same ones bought at the grocery store. I have bought kid clothes there, they stain easily and I try not to use stain lifters on kid clothes, and once we bought a battery charger there, it blew up a month later, fortunately the battery acid was contained and we caught it early enough, when I e-mailed Walmart, they never responded. I e-mailed Dollarama once to tell them I had great customer service, they sent me a gift card ROFL!

My feelings on Walmart, if you have to shop there, like you take a bus and have a very limited budget, then you do what you have to do, but otherwise, there are better deals, better products etc., out there.

I would talk to the local feed shop.

(Sorry for the Walmart rant, I have not found them or Target to be worth a darn here in Canada)

Walmart sells regular merchandise that is different and often substandard to name brand stuff at other big box stores.

But prescription drugs? I can not imagine in a million years that Walmart would sell fraudulent, counterfeit or off drugs. FDA regulates those. No federal agency regulates the quality of children's t-shirts (and frankly, folks should realize that if they're paying 1/2 for t-shirts, they're getting poor quality).

Frankly, Jamie (and everyone else), Consumer Reports said last month that Costco is even cheaper than Walmart for most drugs. So you might want to check out Costco before you commit to buying at Walmart. Walmart may STILL be charging more than you need to spend. I buy almost all my dogs' Rx drugs at Costco. I buy some of ours there and some via mail order with no noticeable change in quality. They work exactly the way they're supposed to. No issues there at all.

As for Interceptor, my vet just ran out. They had a larger supply stocked up. It's possible that Walmart did. Given their purchasing power, it's possible that Walmart went to one of the major distributors and *bought up* the supply and hastened the demise of Interceptor. I still have some for my kids. It expires the middle of next year.

You can always buy some then call Novartis with the package code to ensure that it's a good batch.

I would just make sure when I buy it that I'm not buying it for past the expiration date (if it expires March 2014, don't let them charge you for a whole year's supply).

I despise WalMart. But I know a lot of people who shop there out of economic necessity. The food products they buy there are safe. The OTC and Rx drugs they buy there are safe. These items get customers into the store so that they buy the other junk they don't need.

That's why the pharmacy is always in the back of the store. wink

If I were travelling; if Walmart were the only pharmacy around, and if we couldn't wait, I wouldn't hesitate to fill any of my family prescriptions at Walmart -- that's the humans or the dogs. And I think you know how careful I am. FWIW. shrug

I absolutely detest Walmart. I'm far from wealthy yet I prefer shopping at a store I trust more than saving $$$ shopping at Walmart. Wish they'd get a Costco in this area.

Thanks for the opinions, all. I'm just not sure how I feel about it either. I'm not a huge fan of Walmart but I shop there on occasion. I just know it's sometimes 'sketchy' to get pet medications outside of the vet's office. I figured at least Walmart is a known entity that is more likely to be on the up-and-up.

Still not sure I'd feel comfortable purchasing Ris' meds there or not. Just wish I could get my hands on Interceptor again!
