The discussion was interesting, but some of the responses were a little flip. I don't speak psychiatry, so I guess I don't know what qualifies as mental illness. I do know that Wolf found the world frightening and we could only neutralize some of that. Maybe drugs would have helped. Anyway, if you feel there are threats everywhere, I think that should qualify as an illness of the mind.

I would like to hear more about therapy.

thanks,
Mary Jane

I agree MJ.

There is the school of though (which I disagree with) that thinks of dogs not as emotional beings, but dogs that can be conditioned to behave a certain way.

Those of us that live our lives with dogs, truly live our lives with them by our sides, know better.

I like Hugh McClelland too! I also agree with you Lisa, of course without doing MRIs etc I can't be sure Moo doesn't have health issues but seeing as she is calmer and recovers quicker on the Prozac, I have to assume...

I can't open the link at work, blocked. frown

Having no idea what is says I would just add that I do think animals can become mentally ill. They are emotional beings. I do not think their emotions are probably as complex as human emotions but they do have them and it is very obvious to me when my dogs are angry, frustrated, sad, or happy. We did have a cat that was mentally ill, we ended up eventually having to euthnazie her.
