We broke down and bought a dehydrator so I could make my own sweet potato treats and not have to worry that something made in china might make Siena sick or worse. I made my first batch last night.

Got me wondering if anyone has recipes (no poultry) or ideas for other treats?? There are a couple of ones in the book.

Thanks, Destiny. I'd have to do an alternate meat (she is allergic to poultry). Beef would work smile

We mix steel cut oats with ground buffalo to give her meds. I made a couple mini parties and put it in to see if that is an option wink

For beef, you don't need a recipe. Just slice thin and spread out in the dehydrator. That's all my DH does and the dogs (and us,too) love it just like that.
We watch for sales on beef and try to get things like London Broil or top round roasts so there's not a huge amount of fat to have to remove.

DianaB— we have a dehydrator also, love it and use it 99% for the dogs at the moment.

• London Broil makes a great Beef Jerky, (we always buy on sale)

Less expensive items here for us, like 99¢ a pound or less are: (they love these).
• Kidneys, Beef • Heart, Beef • Liver, Beef (takes a really long time to dehydrate the liver, but they love it)

New item:
• Lamb Chops

*Note: we freeze all meat we can’t dehydrate that day and found that the semi-defrosted meat cuts better and dehydrate drier.
We do not season any of their food. They really love it warm off the rack, takes only about 3½—4 hours.

Here is the Cookbook—Link that came with the machine, tells you how long stuff takes.

I’ve also dehydrated lemon peel for us. My friend makes everything, bananas, apples, etc.
You can make regular potatoes in there too, but the question for us is to blanch or not to blanch first, I’m told the only difference is the color of the end product.

My mom makes and sells homemade dehydrated jerky. She doesn't have any recipes; they are just meat only.

My dog's personal favorite is beef heart...very lean if you cut the fat off and easy to break into smaller pieces smile

Our favorite Beef Jerky recipe.
I hope you don’t mind me putting a few pictures up here when we first made beef jerky for the boys. I didn’t include all the pictures, but I have the step by step.

• Nesco® Dehydrator and Jerky Maker (500 watts, Model FD-61).

• Bought some Beef Round Sirloin Tip London Broil, Boneless, $2.99/lb and Certified Angus Beef Round Top, $3.17/lb

Hand slicing the meat


Filling as much meat as possible onto all of the trays


• Set to 160°

1 piece is ¼ oz of 100% Beef!


Made 7 — 4oz bags that first day.
It doesn't last long, but we store it the refrigerator & freezer.

Well, that’s our Beef Jerky Making recipe! Again, hope you don't mind the pictures.

We usually store jerky in a large jar, sometimes in bags like shown above. You do need to check that there is no condensation inside the container. That means they're really not completely dried. Sometimes, DH will put them in those vacuum sealed bags, but you have to be carefull with that. Since things don't really lay nice and flat, the ends can puncture the bags.

I think they actually keep far longer than they last around our house. My DH views them as snacks for himself, not just the dogs, especially the beef jerky. We're lucky if a batch lasts a month (unless I hide it from him rofl2).

We do "sun-dried" tomatoes the same way and I've got some that are over a year old that are perfectly fine.

We watch for sales and stock up when the beef is 1.99 a pound. That's getting harder to do right now after all the drought and such in the Midwest.

We store what the boys will eat within one week in pre-measured zippered bags like above in the freezer. We bring a small bag like this with us in the bedroom overnight incase it’s needed.

Special items or for anything longer than one week we use the (we broke down and bought) vacuum sealer and pop into the freezer.

We do not have a huge freezer inventory of jerky because the boys eat it, thankfully.
They love it best warm off the racks.

I freeze our jerky because our one boy who is sick.

Woodreb— how much do you make per “batch” of beef and what kind of beef are you making? Ours goes really fast.
Can you tell me more about the sun-dried tomatoes? I have a wonderful batch of homegrown tomatoes and was thinking of doing this. How Long? Temperature? and any special prep other than washing?

Our jerky batches vary in size. The last batch he made was to dehydrate ~ 5 pounds to send to his brother, deployed in the Mid East for 6-12 months and he expects to have to do this again before his brother comes home. He made a little extra for us and that's gone already. We don't feed it as a meal, we just use it as treats for the dogs and snacks for ourselves.

We usually get Londron Broil or Top Round roast, there's not so much fat waste on those cuts. Sometimes we'll use Bottom Round roast, but that's fattier and DH really prefers to use one of the other 2 cuts if we can catch a good sale. What generally happens is: we need beef for hamburgers or meatballs or just to have ground beef on hand. We'll watch for a sale, make up a supply of burgers, meatballs, whatever we need, vacuum seal and freeze. Whatever is left, he'll make a batch of jerky - so it could be any where between 2 and 5 pounds of beef. Sometimes he gets a few pounds just to make as jerky to take on Civil War re-enactments. When we catch a sale on chicken breasts we'll make jerky with them for dog treats as well.

As far as sun-dried tomatoes, we usualy do that with Roma or some sort of paste tomato because they're meatier, with less water. Cut them in half or quarters length wise and set on the dehydrator trays. I think we use ~ 140 °F for a temperature. But as far as how long, all I can say is "until they are done". I know that doesn't sound very helpful, but the dried tomato should be kind of crunchy, not rubbery. DH just keeps checking them periodically. We have this dehydrator . We got it on sale a couple of years ago. Because of the design, he rotates the trays every so often, so that everything finishes at the same time. Otherwise, the highest and lowest trays take longer to process than the ones in the middle (closest to the fan). So he is checking every few hours or so. Dehydrating is usually DH's thing, I help with cutting stuff up, but he monitors tha processing.

I store the tomatoes in a mason jar and like to grab a handful and crush into whatever cassarole I think may benefit from the intense tomato flavor. I also like to keep some in a bottle of olive oil. The oil gets a little infused with the tomato flavor and then I can cut up the tomatoes and add to a meal. When stored in oil, they are not so crunchy, a little more "rubbery".

We haven't tried doing this with beef heart or organ meats. I bet the dogs would love it!

Woodreb— thank you. I appreciate the tip on the top / bottom round roasts, haven’t tried that yet.

Gotcha on the tomatoes. Appreciate the temp, I hear you on the time… I like the idea of putting them into the olive oil too. I LOVE your dehydrator, that is really nice.
