I so like looking at hip x-rays and then knowing what they were rated by OFA so I thought perhaps we could get a group of them in a thread!

I do not have the x-rays from 2005, but my dog was rated OFA good then. There were from 2012 or 6.5 years later.....for something else..I think they have held up pretty well.

Great idea for a thread!

Gryff's, at 24 months:

They went OFA Good, though many experienced people on two different boards felt that they could have gone excellent, and indeed, I don't any difference between Gryff's x-rays and the ones posted above that went excellent - but I guess an experienced eye would spot important differences.

Karlo(Gryff's littermate) at 24 months~OFA Fair taken just days after Gryffs:

Can anyone spot the difference in the boys to make one go fair/one good?
From what I compare, Karlo has a thickening in one side, compared to the other and they aren't as defined as Gryff's. FWIW, they are about 10# different in weight(Bone structure?) Same height.

Great educational thread. It will be great to compare ratings with x-rays. I wish I had mine. Mine were just done on film, and I never thought to take a picture of them when they were in the light box. Ruger went OFA fair and Cues was OFA good. I'd like to see them side by side. Hope more folks can post their x-rays.

I hung them up and took a picture of the x-ray so the contrast is off. These were done at 24 months, no sedation.

Just got results back today. 2.5 year old female

Based upon the radiograph submitted, the consensus was that no evidence of hip dysplasia was recognized. The hip joint conformation was evaluated as: FAIR

I'm very pleased.

Riva - 24 months. Was sedated with domitor and the vet took 8 shots of her hips. They reversed the domitor and I didn't like the positioning, so he took more shots while she was awake, yet still a bit groggy. Turned out better when she was awake, she wasn't as limp and floppy. My vet is so cool. I stayed with her the entire time, from sedation until she was awake. Watched the x-rays from outside the x-ray room door.

He said the elbows looked great. I have no idea how to read elbows.

Now to wait and see what OFA says.... impatient

Don't have any xrays to add to this thread but I thought it would be a good spot to add this video on 'The Importance of Precise Positioning for OFA radiographs'. Had a great discussion on this at training the past Sunday.

Hi all

New to this board, but i do think this thread was a great idea!

I just got my baby's scans in, didn't realize i had to send them off somewhere else to get a rating, and i was eagerly waiting on a result.

What are some thoughts?

I have attached 3 images.

Cheers

I posted a video earlier that talks about the importance of proper positioning. Take a look at that or maybe even show it to your vet. Here's an article about this which shows at the top right a picture of 2 x-rays, taken 2 months apart of the same dog. One bad position, one good. Take a look at that picture. It reminds me of your x-ray only bad on the opposite side. http://www.takuaussies.com/hips.htm

Thanks

I will get onto the vet who did them, if they don't redo it for free i am certainly not going to pay again.

If i just kept these, could i at least be at ease that she is not extremely bad ?

Even crooked, it looks like the one our left might be a touch further out of the socket? They are nice and smooth though, looks like no remodeling.

I don't understand the elbows though, they look odd?

Remodeling happens when the joint isn't quite right and there is "wear" on the joint, causing curved parts to flatten, bone spurs, jagged edges, etc. No remodeling is good!

The elbow, the "globby" thing. Is that just something on the table or the xray? An elbow callous? I have no idea what that is.

I should say, I have very limited knowledge about reading xrays. Vinne, for example, would have seen more joint xrays with her number of dogs than I have.

I do not think she is extremely bad at all. I think there may be a mild lack of coverage of the ball of the hip on one side, but the extent is difficult to say because of the positioning. A straighter xray may show no problem.

I like giving a joint supplement in general, and I would use a supplement in this dog. Of course if the dog is young, these hips may still change I think?

I don't think the hips would pass based on the left hip, which I think would be graded Mild HD due to the subluxation. The right is better and would be a fair, IMO. Yes, the positioning could be better, but I doubt whether it would change things significantly. At her age it's highly unlikely there would be any improvement. Having said that, even if her hips don't pass OFA and are not suitable for breeding, that doesn't mean she can't lead a normal life. She may never have any clinical symptoms. Again, this is solely my opinion. Only OFA or a consult with an ortho specialist can tell you for sure.

Here is a link which has examples of OFA grades:

http://www.offa.org/hd_grades.html

How much glucosamine is she on?

What Sandy says makes sense.

And all of this seems consistent with what the vet said. I saw on the other forum that you heard back from him.

I would though make sure that you were giving an adequate doe of joint stuff.

Need to fix a typo on my post. The left is better than the right, not the opposite as I originally posted. I must be dyslexic today!

She is getting about 1000 - 1200mg glucosamine, + the MSM and chron that comes with it.

And The fish oil,

Just for reference what the specialist said that i posted in the other forum is below;

"Her hips and elbows are fairly good. The hips - the right hip is just slightly shallow and just slightly loose - nothing to worry about, the left hip has a very slight thickening of the cranial acetabular edge, again nothing to worry about, her elbows are normal. There is a calcinosis ( calcium deposit next to one elbow - again not an issue, won't cause any lameness etc.
Her hips would probably score around 6-8 on the right and 4-5 on the left. The pass mark for the "A" stamp is a maximum of 8 points in total with no more than 3 points in any one area. Certainly would not be concerned about either of her hips or elbows as a long term issue,"

"She would rate 1 down from excellent, you do not ned to limit her exercise , however treadmill can be rather dangerous unless watched closely best if you take her running - good for both of you! Glucosamine and fish oil are never wasted, won't do any harm, can help, "

That sounds like good amount for the supplement.

I am now confused as per the comment from Sandy and what the specialist here has said!

Hi, I just joined the forum. Would like to get peoples opinion on my 6 year old GSD hip x-ray. I took him to the vet as he's been limping for the last couple of days, after examination and x-rays the vet is pretty sure he has some issue with his right knee and the hips look fine. To me the positioning for the x-ray is not good, but maybe its good enough to rule out any problems with the hips. What do you all think?

Just a reminder, that this thread is for hip xrays that are sent for OFA rating. If anyone wants to discuss other xrays, here is a good thread for that, or you can start a thread just for your dog.
