The new medication is not working. Dr. Goldman said the only options left are removing the spleen or using immunoglobians (sp). I think removing the spleen is out due to the high percentage of him bleeding out early in the surgery. She is to call me on Monday with a price on the tranfusion. However, I have thought about all of this and due to the fact that my job will be over on Mar. 16, or soon thereafter, I believe it is unrealistic for me to continue to spend large amounts of money. I have a mortgage, etc. If there was a secure job waiting for me, I would continue to do whatever and at this point and time I plan on contining the meds until Dr. Goldman tells me to stop if I can.

Riley still continues to show no signs of slowing down. This is the hard part. As I told Dr. Goldman if he was dragging around, there would be no question that the time was right. However, if I were to let him go now, I would feel like I'd had opened the back door and called him to come to me and then taken my gun and shot him in the head. She said, you just don't need to let him go right now. She said if I came dragging him in, she would beg me to let him go. However, she said for some reason he is just not ready to leave. I said, "I know, he wants to stay with me." "I guess I should never have taught him the command, "stay with your mama."

I'm so sorry, I was hoping/praying that this last med would help him.

It sounds like you and his vet have come up with a good plan on how to handle this very sad, very difficult situation. You've done so much to try to get his health back to normal.

And we can always hope and pray for a miracle.

You know, we have been outside. He acts the same. Wants to play. It is amazing to watch him want to continue with the way he has always played.

I am very sorry that the meds aren't working for Riley. My father died of chronic lymphocyte leukemia in 1999. He never slowed down and he never gave up. He had the disease for 7 years and he lived his life to the fullest during that time. wub

Riley doesn't have to intellectually process the disease, he just lives in the moment. I think it's very wise to take your cues from Riley. I hope you can enjoy the time you have with him. hugging

I've been away dealing with a bad sewage backup problem at the house and have been away from the computer but I just want to thank everyone for all the support you have given me. Riley continues on each day. I am seeing some tiny little areas where it appears blood may be pooling but not many and they are not enlarging.

Steph is right. I have to trust my gut-level feeling and trust Riley to show me. It is hard because when he acts so normal, I get used to it feeling normal again and reality rears up and I realize where we are.

Again, thanks all.

Sally

Last week I spoke with the vet about the immuglobian transfusion. It is just too expensive for me to cnsider at this point in my life with the firm I work for closing soon. She suggested having another ultrssound to see if perhaps cancer has been missed the first time around. I agreed to that and scheduled it for this morning.

Yesterday was pretty and several of my neighbors were outside. I decided to take Riley to visit them and say goodbye. I have a single mother who lives across the street and her two boys were outside playing basketball with several friends. We stopped to say goodbye to the boys and as I walked away, I heard one of the friends mumble something and one of the boys said, "Man what you talking about - that dog's like a child to her."

When I am home, Riley never leaves my side. This morning while we are in the kitchen, he leaves and goes to his crate. He never goes to his crate now unless he is afraid, does not feel good, or there is a storm coming. This was an alert to me today. The vet tech noticed a change in him immediately when we entered today. In addition he has a large bruise on his side. I cancelled the ultrasound but left him to have his platelets checked again. I know they won't be up but I just felt I needed to have them checked. I feel the time is near. I will talk with the vet at 1:00 today. I am ready and then I am not ready for this. I can't imagine my life without him - my house without him in it - not hearing him bark when I come home and being the first one at the door to say hello before any of the other dogs.

Later Sally

I'm so sorry Sally hugging

I found that to be able to do it, I went into some kind of "zone", and it made sense, and although it was one of the hardest things I'd ever done, it was the right thing to do. Acfter Max was gone, it took a couple of weeks for me to come out of that zone (shock?) and feel the full impact of everything.

Peace and strength to you hugging
