I have added a survey to my DM website, The Home of the Degenerative Myelopathy Support Group
http://www.mzjf.com
After hearing about several GSDS that tested clear of having the SOD1 gene (that University of Missouri claims is responsible for DM) and having the dogs come up positive for DM upon necropsy, I decided I would like to be able to follow the results, personally. There is much at stake for our breed. I have always felt that DM of Corgis and Boxers (and other breeds) are a very different disease than GSDM. The test results of the disease and the etiology of ALS and DM are entirely different and I do not believe that DM of the GSD is ALS, as claimed by the University of Missouri. I hope those of you who have had your dogs tested will fill out the survey, and keep me updated in the future. Having lost one dog to DM, and now having another who is in the advanced stages of the disease, I am quite interested in following up on the claims about the SOD1 test, which I feel is very premature in determining/predicting the development of DM of the GSD.

The survey can be reached on the http://mzjf.com/test.html page of my website
The direct link to the survey is http://www.mzjf.com/forms/form.cdform.php

Thank you to all who will participate, and please crosspost to other German Shepherd Boards.

Hi Marjorie,

I'm glad that you are conducting this survey and will be glad to provide information, but I wonder if it will be useful to you.

Wolf was tested and found to be a carrier. He died not long thereafter from aspiration pneumonia, he never displayed hind end weakness.

Mars was tested but he's not even 2 yet. He has been neutered. He tested clear.

Should I enter their results?

thanks,
Mary Jane

Yes, please do enter the info of Mars. If there is ever any signs of DM (and I pray there will NEVER be!!) please do update your survey. Since Wolf has passed and never displayed hind end weakness, there is nothing to follow up on.

Thanks, Mary Jane!
