Piper has been licking her butt for a few days so I made a vet appt. tomorrow for anal gland expression since she needs it from time to time. Took a real close look at the area tonight and it does not appear to be anal glands. There's fresh blood coming from what appears to be a growth near her anus. Doesn't look like PF, but does look like a growth. Putting the No Bite collar on her now so she doesn't irritate it any further. Will be calling in the morning to change the tech appt. to a full appt. frown

PF's can start by first "blistering". The vets that saw Max's PF initially didn't recognize that it was a PF....I think they can look different when first starting.

I hope that it's something "easy"!

Thanks Lisa and Diana. I'm trying to think back to what Starine's PF looked like at first, but it's been so long. It is possible, although I don't recall the bright red fresh blood. She's being so good about the Bite Not collar (or whatever ir's called) although she can still reach the area to lick a bit. Don't have the heart to put the full e-collar on tonight since she had to wear it for 3 weeks earlier this year after her last surgery.

Max had the red blood at times frown

Orajel for gums will help relieve some of the pain back there. Some dogs on the PF list really respond to Benadryl, if it's really driving them nuts, others use a baby aspirin. I used to use a warm washcloth soak in epsom salts. I don't know if the zinc cremes make them feel better....preparation H might....

Max says that the boxers weren't too bad:

Foxtail, from sitting somewhere, would also make sense.

Hoping all is okay with Piper. You have had a heck of a year already you don't need any more to worry about.

Maybe "just" a ruptured anal gland. I saw one at the vet office once while we were waiting. Cute little fluffy dog and I was talking to it, she turned around and sick I almost passed out.

I hope it's a ruptured anal gland too, that a flush sick and Abx will take care of. Will find out at 4 today.

Lisa, I think Max looks quite handsome in his pants!

Impacted anal glands - Whew. Expressed and infused with Baytril. One side had frank blood inside (likely what I saw last night) so a 10 day course of Baytril and a recheck in one week. No sign of a tumor or fistulas. Such a relief considering what it could have been.

Met the new doc at the practice today. He was very gentle and good with her. I think I like him already. Even though he looks like he's 20 yo!

So glad to hear that it's only impacted anal glands. That's bad enough, but treatable.

I am so glad this turned out OK - I wouldn't wish that on any dog, but I am so glad it was not worse.

Hooray for Piper!

Beats the alternative! The Baytril will probably take care of it. Barker the Elder had recurrent issues with anal glands until a vet said "that's way too often to be expressing those" and squirted some antibiotic up them. She never had another impacted gland.

She had a growth on her eyelid and there was concern it was a squamous cell carcinoma. They also took off a few fatty masses on her chest, that were in a bad position when she lays down, while she was under.

ah, I remember now! I was just checking if there might be any connections, but sounds *very* unrelated.
