This has been Jax's week. Monday she went to the vet for a mystery growth on her leg. Scheduled for removal on the 20th.

Over the last month, she hurt her hind leg. I think playing frisbee. The first time, she yelped afterwards when inside jumping up on the ottoman. Limped a bit and was fine the next day. Next incident, after agility and a bit of frisbee, she wouldn't put any pressure on her leg and was fine the next day. Third time, after agility practice, limped a bit that night but was fine the next day.

Last night, after agility, yelped, limped, avoided putting pressure on her leg. This morning, yelped when jumping up on the bed.

What kind of injury comes and goes after activity? And varies in intensity?

She has an ASCA agility trial tomorrow. If she's still sore, I"m going to scratch her and eat the cost. frown

Are you sure it is leg and not back or hip injury?

If it is a pulled or strained muscle, then rest is your best friend. If it is a pinched nerve then I think if you can find a Chiropractor for dogs that is the way to go.

Have you checked the back and leg for sore spots?

I have had two dogs with knee problems and neither yelped after the initial injury. I did have a dog with a pinched nerve in his neck (long time ago) and he would yelp when he got his head and neck at that certain spot.

Since it was frisbee I would suspect a knee injury. A partial tear can appear to come and go because it may only hurt when they are using it strenuously.

I agree with Val though, it could also be a back injury or alignment issue.

Regardless, I would do short leash walks only until you figure it out. And you can give Arnica.

I think the injury is in the knee. I don't think she's bending it. She doesn't make a sound when I'm pushing and squeezing. I finally found a site on ACL tears. I wish I had found it when it was really bothering her. When she sits, she is leaning towards the side she isn't favoring.

Well the important thing is that you are getting the info now. I missed it if you posted earlier that she hurt her knee.

Rest - Rest - Rest. That is leash walks, no tearing around inside or outside. Limit the jumping on furniture, even if that means crate rest.

The sitting funny can be a sign of knee injury. With Cheyenne, the injured knee isn't bent and under her, it is more straight. I can see if I can get a picture, she hates the camera so it isn't always possible to get the shot I want.

No, I didn't post earlier. I didn't give it much thought because she was fine the next day the first time. And even though her discomfort was worse the second time, again she was fine the next day. The third time was minimal limping. I looked to see if she was holding her leg out straight when sitting and she's not. It's bent at the same angle as the other, she's just leaning to the other side as if to take pressure off it.

Scratch for tomorrow. She just jumped up on the bed (a raised bed with drawers under it), yelped, jumped back down and wouldn't put any pressure on it. Call the vet on Monday. If it's an ACL, I'll take her to Cornell.

It could be knee or back. Max's back issue looked a lot like a knee - even one chiro vet kept insisting that was the case. His regular vet thought back. His regular chiro didn't make any difference, but his other chiro was able to fix it - it was his SI joint. We dinked around with that probably for about 8 months frown

I'm really sorry to hear about Jax - hope that it's something that heals quickly hugging

I'm positive it's her leg and not her back.

Thanks! smile I'll just keep her quiet over the weekend and call the vet on Monday.

So were we, for about the first 6 months! But, then again, Max is special wub

If there was a tick bite near that leg, could also be some weird tick thing, if nothing else shows up.

I hope this doesn't turn into a mystery, but something easily fixable!

I"m pretty sure I know exactly when it happened and it would have been a hard bend on her right knee while playing frisbee. No ticks on her.

Oh, that's right, you can pinpoint the injury. That helps.

Better to have an idea of what happened than a mystery limp. Hope Jax feels better soon.

Poor Jax! I hope this is nothing serious and just a strain. I would agree with scratching her. Better to eat the entry than further injure her and I know you would never put her at risk knowingly.

Yes, it does sound like an ACL, especially with it coming on after exercise. Hope it turns out to only be a partial tear that doesn't need surgery and can be resolved with good nursing. Give it as much total rest as you can until you get her to the vet.

Thanks everyone. Right now I have to find something to occupy her mind. After two days with no exercise, she is eyeballing Sierra and torturing the cat. I see disaster soon. Poor Cracker has had his head swallowed and been laid on. But in Jax's defense...he is in her seat!
