I am looking to change Max's joint supplement, and I realized that we don't have a good, *single* sticky for joint supplements. I am hoping that folks will put their favorite joint supplements here, with links if posible, for a really good collection of favorite products.

I have been happy using Cosequin/Cosamin for Max, together with Hyaluronic Acid, which is what I also used for Indy. Max though does also get an Adequan injection at home every 3-4 weeks since he started with a low back issue that sidelined him for months. Both of these have worked well with his extreme allergies. However, with a recent spike in liver enzymes, I'm going to see if a supplement without manganese is more liver friendly.

This is the HA I've been using:
http://www.vitacost.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Hyaluronic-Acid

I think this HA worked well when I tried it, but upset his stomach when I tried it: http://www.trixsyn.com/

Vet gave me Dasuquin with MSM for Riley. She told me it's her favorite. I checked out Springtime supps and found the Dosuquin has more than double the ingredients as the Springtime.

We've been using Flexicose for Kaiser - he's just a little stiff when getting up after laying down for awhile and it seems to be helping. It's also good that he doesn't notice it added to his food since he's so picky! They package it for humans and for pets, but it's the same stuff.

Sam's Club glucosamine, for no particular reason. They don't really need it, but I'm being open-minded and giving it to them anyway.

Guess that doesn't really help though with the people who have dogs with problems. frown I will, however, be reading this for future reference.

I do 2 different things (for 2 different dogs) but am thinking I might switch both to the same.

For Jesse (14 yo) we give Springtime Longevity.
http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/longevity/dogs
(Which BTW is cheaper if you use the affiliate link here to Amazon then buying direct.)

For Dalton (11 yo) we use a product called Joint Resolution.
Because I'm an affiliate and re-seller of this product I'm not allowed by the company to post a link on a BB (they consider it spam which is strictly forbidden by this company.) You'll have to PM me if you want more info. wink

Here's a list of the ingredients for the Joint Resolution;
BioCell Collagen II
Hyaluronic Acid
Chondroitin Sulfate
Devils Claw Root
Boswellia
Dandelion Root
Licorice Root

Home of;
Sundance (Ezio zu Treuen Händen, ADC, BH, HIC)
Butch (Dario von der Staatsmacht, APr3, NW2, L1V, HIC, ORT, UpDog points)
& Wyatt the cat

I have used a couple of products. The one I've used the most is Nurpo Joint Support Supplement. I get it for my senior dog and there is a noticeable difference when she gets it, she's not as sore/stiff. I started adding it to my younger dogs food when he was about a year and a half old, I did his OFA hip/elbows at 3yrs old and he got excellent/normal. Makes me wonder if that helped at all?
Here is the link for Nupro http://www.nuprostore.com/nuprojointsup.htm

Right now I am trying Next Level Joint Fluid, it seems good. I also want to try Finish Line Joint Supplement, I have friends that use it and swear by it. I just think I have to get someone to bring it up from the US for me, everywhere I checked said we can't get it in Canada.

Hope it's ok to stick a question in here .. if your dog has been xrayed and found to not have HD is it recommended to still give this type of supps or do they not need them?

My opinion is that the damage starts occurring long before we can see any symptoms externally or with our diagnostics. Even dogs without HD eventually get arthritis, so this is something that affects all animals and humans, to some degree.

So, yes, I believe that there is benefit to supplementing with joint supps! Now, what age to start? That might be trickier. Max came here at 18 months and it was the first thing I did for him (after changing his food). His xrays (last year?) actually looked pretty good for a 10 year old GSD. Indy had fairly good joints until the end too, and she was started on supps very young (she did have HD).

To play devil's advocate - there is no research that proves early supplements prevent problems or arthritis, but thinking about, and finally agreeing with, Lisa's theory, I started mine on glucosamine when they were just about 5 years old in just that case of undetected problems. They are not toxic, so if further research eventually proves otherwise, my guys will have a headstart.

Sorry. I would really like to use the affiliate link, but if you are watching pennies a I do, it is cheaper at Springtime.

On the link it is $39.98. At Springtime it is $45 but I always buy 2 at a time and get a 3rd one free. So at Springtime $90 buys three and on the link it is $80 fr just 2.

Sorry for the hijack.

I 'think' Max cannot take Longetivity - it has "beef or pork liver." I think Lisa said he cannot have that, but I could be confusing him with someone else.

Of their supplements for joints, only their Joint Health Formula in powder form does not have liver and it does look like a good product-

I've had excellent results with Dasuquin w/MSM. Mac's on it now and not doing bad for his age. My last group of old guys (Ringer, Honey & Kelly) also took it and it seemed to help them too.

Dasuquin with MSM is what Riley is taking and what both our vets highly recommended. I would really like to try the soft chews but after reading the ingredients - nooooo way. The soft chews have BHA and BHT preservatives in them, the chewable tabs do not -- at least according to the ingredients on the bottle I have. Darn the luck!

After reading Lisa's post I'm probably going to put Nissa on them, too.

Thank you for remembering! Yes, the pork *and* carrot are on his allergy list (luckily I've been able to feed beef lately).

Great input from everyone!

I have a friend using Synovi3 (?) and says it's not doing much - he's using a low dose, but wondering if anyone has had any experience with that one?

In researching joint supplements, I learned that it works on a building block system...each supplement being one building block in joint health. I use Dasuquin, Vit E, Fish oil....and Moj gets Vit C from his NuVets Plus and from the Cranberry he takes for his bladder.

Depending why you're using supplements you do need to add additional C. It works very well in high doses as an anti-inflammatory.

ok I"m going to throw out something completely off the charts:)

I wear magnetic bracelets for my tennis elbow, have a rotten ankle, and wear one on my ankle as well, I swear by them...Lisa, ever thought about a magnetic collar for Max?

If your interested in trying one, let me know, I"d be glad to make one for him, (I make them as well), let me know his neck measurement, (you don't want it tight, but not real loose)..we can experiment:)))

Diane - that is an excellent idea! It sure wouldn't hurt to try - and no side effects!
