Still worried about starting treatment on Mila given her barking/activity outbursts. We have tried xanax and she still can breakthrough that with the barking. I have moved her out of a common area and into a bedroom and into an airline type crate. That has helped a bit but I feel SO bad for her - she loves to be right in the middle of things. She is kind of controlling and uses her voice and jumps around. Very scary picturing those heartworms dying off and causing a clot with that kind of activity.

Now looking at combining Tramadol and Trazodone. If anyone knows anything about this let me know, please! I would like to start her...soon! Anything I use needs to be shown safe for heartworm treatment.

I also contacted a communicator - I will try whatever. She's so darned sweet and I don't want anything to happen to her.

Jean,

I just read your blog about Mila and her heartworm treatment. I have to find a way to incorporate your expression SmartDog into my conversation; it explains a lot I love about some GSD and reasons to prefer living things to plastic handheld devices.

It goes without saying that I can't make any suggestions about better management of your Golden Girl. You certainly have all my best wishes that she can settle enough to get through her treatment.

MJ

Thank you for reading Mary Jane! Yes, I can tell what time it is by what she is telling me to do. smile Even for the other dogs. She's very tuned in - like you said - what we love about the GSD.

Joanne - thank you - Serotonin Syndrome! My aunt had that! Nina was on the same meds (HA!) and did not have a problem. I am going to call the vet about it. I started her on the tramadol anyway, and that seems to help her relax a bit.

And blush I contacted a pet communicator. smile

I am hoping that helps.

Jean, would this be the same pet communicator that we talked about before?

Just for my own benefit as I know that you and BDBH have mucho experience with HW treatment: Why is she not a candidate for the slow treatment protocol? Thanks!

wub that dog.

Thanks for that! I will print it and talk to the vet - I talked to the pharmacist - she said we are at low doses for both. I am thinking Mila is responding well to the tramadol in general anyway - so happy with that. We were going to do the injection tomorrow, but too hot, so postponed.

Joanne - I think so - in NH?

BDBH does not do the slow kill unless medically indicated due to the amount of time it takes to do that and the damage that can occur while waiting for all the worms to die off. The rescue has done it with a couple of dogs - one took 2 years, the other 1.5 years I believe (I could have this info wrong and will check it). If she were a quiet dog I wouldn't even have a thought about it, but she is so full of it! I wub her too. She is such a strong girl and so very sweet. And earnest. Yeah, we have had 6 HW+ dogs this spring/summer. Nuts.

So I asked about the serotonin syndrome and everyone said doses are low and it's rare in dogs. Then I'm thinking how do we know dogs aren't hallucinating! If she does, I hope she enjoys it. wink

She had her first injection today. She's home and oh my gosh, Mila, settle down. Have you heard of the new tongue in cheek children's book, "Go the F to Sleep"? I am seriously understanding the authors now instead of being the horrified old counselor lady...pleeeeease Mila, be quiet. We shall see - I did "sedate" her, she is not very Ramones-like! Let's hope this is all just a sign of how good she feels.

She came bouncing out, all happy, snippy snapping at me, doing her circles, I was horrified. In the car she was dancing. And I'm praying, Mila, please just hold still. I just love her - she honestly reminds me a teeny bit of Kramer with her willfulness and energy.

Here she is waiting to go in - she gained some needed weight and is at 55# now.

Good thoughts for her quiet, easy recovery gratefully accepted. thanks

A thousand thoughts for her quiet, easy recovery today and some more tomorrow. Maybe King Kramer can spiritually whisper the virtues of dignified rest.

Then...when she's quiet...I get nervous.

Thanks for the good thoughts - big believer in that. The one vet today said when she gets her needles to start practicing acupuncture, she'd work on Mila. VERY excited for that. There's no chance she'd hit the wrong "chi button" right? paranoid

Oh gosh Jean - you're going to have your hands full with this girl. How's she doing now? Any calmer? Hoping you can keep her subdued through this. I read the blog too - very informative!
