Let me preface this with the following fact: Max is at the butthead age of 8.5 mo. Max has lost pool privilegs at the dog park due to inappropriate behavior (my ban, not official). Our dog park has a small kiddie pool for the 4-legged kids. Some dogs make use of it for a LARGE water bowl (the St. Bernard really likes the size) and others use it for what it is: a pool to play and splash in. Not Max. Max walks in and pees. A dump and change of the water isn't difficult (the pool is right next to the spigot & hose) but its the principle. I've kept him out as best I can but he sneaks in and stops to pee before I can get him out. He generally listens to me (the butthead thing) but the sight of the pool drives all remembering of commands and even his name totally out of his shrinking mind. Any ideas on getting him to stop? 3 other dogs got guilty looks the last time corrected him but not Max . As some may remember he's really my Dad's dog and I'm just getting him trained and exercised. We'd thought about getting him his own pool for at home (I can dump the water after our evening walk) but really don't want to go that route if he's just going to pee in it all the time. Dad can't be dumping the pool several times a day.

I'd start with keeping him on a long line, let him go to the pool, when you see the signs of him getting ready to go, give a leash correction, tell him no, and maybe walk him to a tree where it is appropriate for him to go and tell him to do his business there.
when I had a kiddie pool out for the dogs at my old house, we had a problem with wild turkeys going in it and pooping in the water! Sydney and Shane did not like that LOL

I'd start with keeping him on a long line, let him go to the pool, when you see the signs of him getting ready to go, give a leash correction, tell him no, and maybe walk him to a tree where it is appropriate for him to go and tell him to do his business there. Max is still in "puppy mode" and just stops and pees. There isn't enough reaction time between his getting in the pool and starting to pee. I tried on Sunday when we were at the park and the split second between getting in the pool and starting the urine flow is too fast and I was standing right there What is more confusing is he'll pee in the pool but when his lab buddy evidently told him early in the spring that diving into mud puddles was always ok w/ your people pack, he just played in it (he also learned it was NOT always OK). Maybe the pool is too clean? BTW, if I took Max to a tree to pee, he'd look at me like "now why would I want to do that?" He "reads the pee-mail" but makes no comments of his own.

Follow up on this. The past few days, it was overcast and even threatening rain when we got to the dog park. Max and I had the run of the place so I thought it would be a good time for some pool training of sorts. After a few corrections, ok maybe a lot, and even a disgusted "No pee for crying out loud" Max figured out it was a ginormous water bowl and you could stand in there and drink and who pees in a water bowl?? Today, he discovered he could lie down and drink the water too I think I've created a pool hog Oh, one more thing, Max has finally started to mark an occasional tree The marking of a blade of grass is even more popular. Sigh, the little boy is growing up...
