Quynne had a TPLO late Tuesday afternoon (Mar 15). She was not interested in drinking or eating possibly due to the fentanyl patch she was wearing for pain. She has now resumed eating (reduced amount due to inactivity) and drinking but has only had one bowel movement. I had given her a can of sardines to entice her to eat and that worked but there has been nothing else for 3 days - the patch was removed yesterday morning. I gave her another can of sardines today with breakfast and am limiting the amount of bone (she is fed raw). This does not seem to be worrying her. The canned pumpkin that is often mentioned is not available here in Australia (not that I have found anyway - I have not needed it before but I have looked without success just in case I did need it). Thanks in advance for any suggestions??

It took Jax about three days for her digestive tract to start working after being put under for a surgery. She couldn't even keep water down because her muscles just weren't working right yet. I wouldn't get to concerned. Any squash would do, along with sweet potatoes. You just want something high in fiber.

Laos took a couple of days before his 1st BM after his TPLO surgery. They told me not to worry about it that it could take up to 4 days. I remember for the first several days I had to more or less hand feed Laos to make sure he took all the medication that I was mixing with his raw food. Good Luck with your recovery.. it's a hard one to deal with. Sending positive thoughts your way.

I like fresh ground flaxseed, because it contains fiber, and also good fats - the fat helps lubricate and move things along.

Stool softener will make the stool softer and mushier, but won't help move things along.

My dogs have always been constipated from anesthesia.

Wow! I hope she does well with it. Opiates slow down your poops too - takes a while to get things back on track.

And any surgery on the back legs, I think impacts how they can push their poops out - and makes it hurt/harder to do so so they just wait til it's ready to come out more easily.

Mariele (knee) Ilsa (hip) both took a couple of days to poop. Except on Mariele's second knee surgery, I dropped her off and picked her up same day because she had a hard time "emotionally" with the first surgery recovery and I am thinking without the added stress of separation and much less narcotic on board over time, she was able to let 'er rip sooner.

XOXO to her! Poor Lynn is such a good resource for this.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have been following Laos's journey even before I knew this was going to happen (like on the day of surgery) and happy to read that today he is doing better.

Here is Miss No Poop - she looks reasonably happy for a dog wearing an cone even though it flattens her ears.

Oh all my best healing thoughts to beautiful Miss No Poop hugging I hope she has a smooth recovery Alison.

I have never found any canned pumpkin either, so I just boil fresh, nothing added to it and then mash it. It has worked for my parents 20 year old cat too.

Please keep us updated hugging

Thanks Bianca, I was looking at the fresh pumpkin today and wondering whether to give it a try. Now I will!

With ACL surgery and the pain patch, I was instructed to feed a can of tuna in oil daily to address the issue of constipation. Worked fine for us.

Thanks Middle, the sardines in oil did the trick again, possibly in the same way as the tuna and the flaxseed. Obviously I was more concerned than Quynne about this. poop rules!!

Thanks for the well wishes Natalie!

Bianca, I think it is a good thing she cannot read, thanks for asking.

I did not immediately replace the elizabethan collar this morning after a short walk for toileting as she was laying with the other leg uppermost but shortly after she was found madly but secretly licking the incision - hopefully no damage has been done. But otherwise she is doing okay. She is on metacam once a day for pain but she is definitely feeling this more since the patch was removed - it is helping keep her quiet which is the only good thing. We go to our first rehab session tomorrow, then next week she is to be put on an underwater treadmill which will be interesting.

Sounds like she's making excellent progress. Make sure that incision is 100% healed before they do the underwater treadmill work. I don't think they started Laos treadmill therapy until week 5 post op.

We saw the surgeon first who said that the incision looked clean but she could tell that Quynne had licked it and to watch it in case it flared which would mean Quynne would need abx but at this stage it was fine - the cone remains for another week. The Physio then spent a hour with us which included a demonstration of a series of exercises for us to do three times a day - I have a sheet of homework to do.

Thanks Lynn, the physio said she wanted Quynne seen immediately prior to the next session and she will not put Quynne in the water without approval from the orthopedic vet that the incision is healed - the staples will not be removed until later, does this sound right?

Thanks Bianca, Quynne is current sleeping the session off at the moment - it must have taken a bit more out of her than I realised. But she did good!!
