I'm very sorry about the infection. Sending strength your way. Yes, satin balls can definitely cause diarrhea. Frankly, when they are in that kind of weakened state, anything can cause diarrhea, even food they've always tolerated just fine.

Look, I'm not there but I know what it feels like. I can't say what your decision should be but I know this is really, really hard for you and I know how much you love her and that you will never want to let her go but that is honestly the final gift you can give her. You've given her so much and she has given it all right back and I know that it's hard to think of this as a gift but it truly is. Again, I am NOT saying this is what you should do right now, just trying to help reframe things in your head. I know perspective seems impossible right now. hugging

The Amikacin sounds very scary (Vertigo?) and being at the vet away from home? I tried to look through the thread to find the classes of antibiotics Chey has been on. The list must be substantial that Amikacin is the only thing left. The situation is so dire, I wish there was something else to try.

I'm sorry I'm not being helpful! We are all very attached to Chey!

We fight and fight to keep them here with us. I understand if you are ready to stop.

Mary Ann, I honestly don't know what to say. I don't know what I would do if I were you. I know this is such a hard time for you. And I am just like everyone else....you want to keep them with you for as long as possible....just like I am doing with Cain. I will pray for you to make the best decision for you and for Chey. I have always said, as long as they are not in pain, they will stay by my side. Hugs and prayers for you.

Have you asked the vet what s/he would do if it were his/her dog? I find that helpful.
When my 33 yo horse was having problems with her remaining eye, the best advise I got was to procede with treatment because if I didn't I would always wonder "what if?" That was from a vet that wasn't treating her but knew me & her.
Can you physically do this? That would figure into the equation. Sometimes we can't afford it either physically or monetarily or emotionally. It's your call and your decision and it will be the right decision whatever it is.

I will only say that of all the people in Chey's life you know her best and have always been her champion.

You will know when it is time to let her rest after so much time fighting.

Whatever the next days or hours bring, we will be here for you.

I would go with Val's suggestion of an abx cocktail. I would also be giving at least 1,000 mcg of B-12, liquid, though sublingual tablets might help.

These infections are so difficult, and the GSD. Immune ytem so susceptible hugging

As much as I care for Miss Chey, I don't know enough to offer any suggestion.

Mary Ann, see if the vet can give you any odds about the success of multiple antibiotics-just to have some facts to work with.

As everybody says, we are standing fast with you and Cheyenne and feeling honored to do so.

I took the advice...and talked to him again and asked about an antibiotic cocktail..but he said no. Here's what I came up with last night...what about if I just make an appt for an exam...since he hasn't seen her in a while...and take it from there.....

...IF he thinks it's worth a shot...I was thinking I can do this on a day to day basis and stop at any time. Will it be difficult..yes...I don't even want to think about that because it feels so overwhelming...but we can do anything if we set our minds to it...that's what I keep telling myself....over and over.
