Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about Cheyenne and I understand how stressful this is for you. hugging

What about colloidal silver? You can spray it on or use a cotton ball and it's supposed to be very effective in treating staph infections. I have used it successfully for my cats to clear up URIs and eye infections in my cats and also Rafi. My vet recommended it for some skin problems that Rafi had earlier in the summer.

Oh, no! I'm so sorry, Mary Ann. hugging Perhaps the E. coli, staph, and other bugs are just normal bug gone wild due to a senior citizen's lowered immune system capabilities? I'm so sorry you're having to separate the fur buddies and re-structure the household right now. May the culture come back soon!

Is Cheyenne on any good, strong probiotics? Just wondering. I don't mean yogurt, but a good probiotic mix from the healthfood store that needs to be kept refrigerated. Just a thought here for boosting immunity.

Sending positive vibes for Cheyenne's skin, groin area, and kidneys. Wishing for only the best and rapid improvements! crossedfingers crossedfingers crossedfingers

I wonder if topical coconut oil would help the sores.

Oregano oil may help with the e.coli.

The colloidal silver will be more effective than oil of oregano, I think. You can definitely put coconut oil on the sores but it sounds like they need something stronger.

There are some studies cited about colloidal silver in the middle of this article, which I didn't read, but certainly would if I were trying to put together a program to fight this stuff: http://colloidalsilversecrets.blogspot.com/2011/06/colloidal-silver-and-e-coli.html

curcumin: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16161063

oregano oil:
http://www.staph-infection-resources.com...mrsa-and-staph/
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22064737

Sores probably need something stronger, but I would use it as part of the protocol: http://www.westonaprice.org/know-your-fats/more-good-news-on-coconut-oil

Thank you for all the ideas!

probiotic makes sense!

colloidal silver...reading all that is making my head spin...should it be sprayed on her...or ingested? still reading all the articles posted....I have a friend here that is touting the benefits of the oils too.......I don't even know how to begin putting a program together.

Poor Cheyenne is now gated off...she's sad...I'm sad...I didn't know what else to do frown

My living room has a big baby gate right down the middle...ugh.

I HAVE to deep clean this house over the weekend...can anyone suggest a nontoxic cleaner that will kill staph and e-coli?

It looks like you can get this from eating chicken (because they are pumped full of antibiotics). So we're all at risk anyway. eek

I wrote to my vet and asked the question about using CS as a spray and/or giving it internally.

It also looks like allicin (one of the components of garlic) can be used to treat antibiotic resistant e-coli. It looks like that has been well studied. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10594976

Thank you for looking into that Ruth. I'm still very confused by all of this...when I think of e-coli...I think of intestinal issues, etc. I'm not sure what it has to do with sores on her body/ why it's manifesting that way? And HOW did she get it...is what is really freaking me out! I mean...she's pretty sheltered. My house, my yard. I have been taking them for long walks in the woods recently...but she already had this. I'm not sure how long she has had this...I only noticed about 1 1/2 months ago or so. But it's in her groin area...a place where it could have been for months without me noticing. Could she have picked up over the summer at the lake? from wild animal droppings? lake water? I don't feed raw. I just don't understand all this. My vet simply said...it's all around us.

Manuka Honey...UMF15 at minimum.

Geisinger Infectious Disease doc recommended it for DD's MRSA and said it's been successful in managing other skin diseases that are antibiotic resistant. You can apply topically and take internally.

e-coli is everywhere. It's a natural bacteria in our system. The majority of UTI"s are caused by e-coli.

D-Mannose is a sugar that strips the outer cell wall from e-coli. Its taken for UTI's and kidney health.

It's in our food (chicken!). And she definitely could have picked it up from lake water. Anyone with a compromised immune system is susceptible. I would guess that a lot of people/animals are asymptomatic carriers. http://seagrant.psu.edu/publications/fs/EColi.pdf

WOW!!

Why is it manifesting on her skin...I thought it was intestinal?

For now...because it was readily available to me, safe and easy to do (along with good reports on Whole dog food journal)...I grabbed that honey.

She is also starting an antibiotic for the staph.

Not always. It's a bacteria. If her skin is compromised, dry, excema, psoriasis, etc, then the barrier is weak and bacteria can get in. That's how the doc explained it to me.

Where did you get Manuka honey with UMF15 or higher? Curious minds want to know so they can pick it up next time they are down there!

Will the antibiotic make the e-coli worse?

The abx should not make the e.coli worse. Cipro is often used for e.coli, but there is resistance.

I used manuka honey here for Max with success. InternaLly and for wound healing externally.

GSDs have weaker skin and mucous membrane defense in general (low IgA), it may very well be an age thing.
