Holy cow! For LJ, the trick - besides the right abx - was a lengthy course of abx which wasn't stopped until 2 weeks after her skin looked normal again.

Mila sends hugs. Her hoo ha had the same issue and is finally better.

That grocery store almost sounds worthy of a road trip, if only it wasn't so far away!

Thank you for all you do for Cheyenne!

LOL...Joanne...you made me laugh!!! Poor Cheyenne and Mila...and their old lady conditions...lol!

ewww...and my job is to brush off all the scabs (which cover her body and take chunks of fur with them) I'm getting the willies! and can just imagine what she's going to look like when I'm done. She's already looking shabby enough...and the shaved ears globbed with white meds don't help..lol

oh Jean...wanna come and help me?

I'm sorry to hear about Miss Cheyenne's autumn ailments and dicey hips, but really glad to get an update.

Looking forward...

You guys are doing a great job, it's so tough to see them have such problems.

There are all sorts of joint threads that might have some help in terms of supplements?

I hope all her "stuff" clears quickly with the abx!

We had our recheck...so I thought I would update. Her skin and ears are healing nicely. We are on one more round of antibiotics and one more ear treatment...but things are progressing nicely.

The bad news is that her hips did not improve at all to the steroids (it was the hope that she had inflammation that would improve). So the overall feeling is that this is not an inflammation issue. She was on a very very low dose of pred. (much lower than for a dog her weight) and Dr. did say I had the option of trying one more round at a higher dose. That being said...something just happened to a friend of mine this week and because of it, I was armed with knowledge I did not have before.

My friend's cat had a routine tooth extraction and was put on steroids. The day after surgery she found her cat in labored breathing. She rushed him to the ER and he was found to be in heart failure. This is what they told her...that the cat had heart problems...that they were not aware of. They said you often don't know your pet has this issue. The steroids can put your animal into heart failure if they have heart problems!

So...armed with that info...I did discuss this with the vet. He also confirmed that steroids can put a cat, dog, human with heart problems into heart failure (cats are the most suseptable)...scarey! Since Cheyenne has a history of heart failure/bad heart....I was not willing to put her at risk with more steroids.

Observing Cheyenne...both the vet and I do not feel she is in any pain. (wish she could talk!)...so for now we are not doing any pain meds. The gut feeling is that her hips are just losing function (they are very bad...as seen on past x-rays).

The plan right now is to try the Dasaquin and see if there is any improvement....and keep in close contact.

Her spirit is great...she's happy, full of life, peppy.

Imput is so welcome!

I haven't been on here in forever, but I knew the first thing I wanted to check out was how ole' Cheyenne had been doing. It's amazing how she went from a dog with a limited future - pretty much a hospice case - to that of a girl who is having the time of her life and loved so unconditionally.

What a wonderful 2 years it's been following this love story!! hugging

I talked to Mary Ann today. She's one of the IE people - I am sending her the link to Firefox to try.

Cheyenne has been doing okay, but not great, with the skin infection so it was cultured.

She has some regular staph, which will respond to certain antibiotics - that's good.

She also has an e-coli based skin infection, and that is one rung down from a MRSA type infection. So there's one abx that will supposedly work according to the culture information, but the downside is really bad kidney side effects.

Mary Ann asked if I would post here today to see if anyone had any input.

Her vet is doing more research.

I just found this link which seems to have a ton of info:
http://www.vet.utk.edu/dermvet/pyoderma.php

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/70900.htm

Thanks for any help for them - she will be reading (and hopefully posting).

Steel had an e-coli infection in his ear. We were lucky that an extended course of cipro cleared it up.

How are Cheyenne's kidney values?

Kidney support? Maybe Azodyl?

I would try melatonin in the evening with the hope it help increae IgA, which defends skin and mucous membranes and GSDs tend to be deficient.

I tripped over this earlier, looking for omething unrelated: http://iai.asm.org/content/63/8/3062

Yucca can help with a lot of side effect of thee infections, the inflammation and toxins.

I'm sorry that Cheyenne I going through this frown

I'm here...using firefox...thank you Jean!!

I'm pretty upset...so please...any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Basically...her groin area is a mass of open sores. Culture showed antibiotic resistent e-coli. She also has bad staph but at least there are antibiotic options. I just called the vet...and there is one more culture that he is waiting on that "may" give us more antibiotic options for the e-coli. Right now...he only knows of one...and that one will be horrible on her kidneys...he doesn't think she can handle it.

In the meantime...he wants me to keep my animals separate from her...HELP!!

1. They've probably been exposed for quite some time and don't seem sick...is that a good sign? (i.e. drinking out of same water bowl, sleeping in same beds, and all that comes with animals living together)

2. I'm going to see if I can separate my house into two separate areas (maybe with lots of baby gating)...we have an open plan...so...it's not going to be easy...but I can't think of anything else. I can't crate and rotate because I only have one crate....

HELP! I'm so upset. I'm worried about my family, my other animals...and heartbroken for Cheyenne. I think my family will be ok because we're all healthy...we've being extra diligent with hand washing and I've told the kids not to pet her to be extra cautious. I think my other animals are my biggest worry. Anyone else ever deal with this? Any imput appreciated.
