OK...WAAAIIIIT A MINUTE!!! I'm blaming a small mix in to her food...BUT...

It just hit me...she's on an antibiotic for her ears!!! Mometamax. Now granted...I didn't think there could be any correlation because it's put INTO her ear...BUT....You think???

MA - check out this link:

Lots of side effects possible, including diarrhea.

Thanks Kris!! got a call back..that dr. wants to give her a med for the diarrhea..but never got a direct answer on this antibiotic! I again said...I need to know if this is it...and should I STOP it. I need to figure out the root cause. Told her to please ask this specifically. He does want to give her a med...afraid of her getting dehydrated and depleted...at this point I agree because nothing I'm doing is helping. thoughts?

Well, I think you definitely need to get the diarrhea stopped. Did he say which med? Hopefully, you'll get an answer back quickly on the antibiotic for her ears. It seems that she can be super sensitive to some things. That link says that diarrhea is an infrequent side effect, but that doesn't mean it isn't causing a reaction with her.

Can Cheyenne have any other protein besides Chicken? Maybe she just needs a bit of a break from chicken?

I have used Imodium in the past with no problems, but it is a big no no for MDR1 dogs.

Val, you know what else I found out about Immodium? You can't give it to a pregnant dog as it can pass through to the pups and cause neurological problems. I've stayed away from Immodium every since my vet told me that - it's a scary medication.

Kris I honestly haven't used it in a couple years.

Mary Ann, Trust me when I say that I had ear problems with Lakota. The only thing I found that would keep his ears in decent condition, not great but decent was the Zymox Products. http://www.germanshepherdhome.net/shop/zymox-products/

I used the Zymox Otic with (1.0%)Hydrocortisone, when his ears were red and sore. I would use the Zymox Otic Hydrocortisone Free on a daily basis if I needed. If his ears were in the bad mode (allergies) I would also use the Zymox Ear Cleanser to help get the gunk out. With the cleaner I would drench his ears massage and let him shake, best to do outside I have light colored walls and ceilings and he would get gunk on both.

I have to order that Val!
I think I will have to do a med with her..I'm too scared to let her get depleted/dehydrated at this point. It will probably be that metro...whatever it is...that's what seems to be the med most prescribed in the past.

I've been using these Zymox products for Caleb ever since Val mentioned them elsewhere on the forum. They seem to be doing a good job for him as well. Caleb has problems with his ears off and on as well.

Metronidazole is also known as flagyl. We used it a lot with Wolf who had stress colitis sometimes after boarding. It is an antibiotic so your vet (I hope) is considering how it might affect the treatment of Cheyenne's ear.

all the best,
Mary Jane

If the loose stools are caused by an antibiotic, I would wonder about giving another abx to prevent it. Flagyl does have anti-inflammatory properties.

Have you been giving probiotics?

eta: Pepto can also be used, it's a mild anti-inflammatory as well.

I like to space the probiotics several hours between antibiotics doses. Say, if breakfast & antibiotics is at 9am, give the probiotics at 2pm, if dinner and antibiotics is a 6pm. Then, a lil more probiotics right before bedtime-- or a heaping tablespoon of plain yogurt as bedtime snack.

Tons and tons of very positive energy flowing out to Cheyenne!

No...haven't given probiotics....we just started those ear drops the day I took her to the vet for the lump (she also had had an ear infection)...and to be honest I never really associated ear drops as being an antibiotic I would need to do that for. The vet did put her on the Metro. They claim none of this is due to the ear meds..and also that this can be given in conjunction. So...I'm really not sure what the root of this is.
Anyway...back tomorrow morning for x-rays...prayering for good results! Thank yo for all the prayers and well wishes!!
