I'm not sure why the britches have been so easy... Maybe because they both keyed into seat belt harnesses for car rides = much excitement. Even when the youngster was still getting car sick, she was excited to get that harness on...

Thanks for the info-3 full weeks huh? Right now it's OK and little Nova likes being cleaned but she is suspicious of the panties. I think better treats are called for.

Here is my point of view (just my opinion) peas and chickpeas and lentils are high in fiber, which some dogs can't absorb all their nutrients. Also, they boost protein in dog food, which is not good, seems the dogs are getting a good amount of protein from legumes which don't have all the amino acids as meat that they need including taurine which is found in meats. Now, there are wild animals that eat grain, but NEVER legumes that I know of. So in a nut Schell I don't like grain free that much. I looked up some grains for their fiber and protein count and legumes have a lot more fiber and protein. Don't know if that matters in dog food? Maybe the protein level in grain in diets may have more of meat protein count, but not sure. Food for thought.

Barker the Elder the second was spayed at about five only because she developed false pregnancies --- and for the last two she thought no other dog deserved to be on the face of the earth or at least no where she could see. Barker the Younger the second is still intact @ 4.5 yo with no false pregnancies to date. It's inconvenient for me but I think healthier for the Barker Sisters. And both of these bled for the full three weeks. (I think I already said it was inconvenient for me.)
Doggie britches were no problem to put on either of them. In fact and somewhat amusing, the call "Panties!" brings the one needing them.

I would use a good food with some grain in and or merrick's grain free line don't have lentils, peas or chickpeas. I have heard puppies do better with some grains in their food, especially if there is no known allergy that a vet found. Maybe some one on here can suggest a good grain in diet. Anymore with dog food I don't even know what brand is good.

I'm not sure what to do here especially with a new pup coming soon. I feed Taste of the Wild. Before I was feeding the different flavors but recently I just switched to their Pine Forrest variety. I did this because I was looking for something different hoping it would help Eli's skin. According to TOTW this receipe includes 'nutrient rich legumes like peas and garbanzo beans.'

I'm not sold on grain free. I'd be fine with a quality food with or without grains.

Oh I would say vigilant at all times. When Cheyenne came in heat there was a lost dog from a Field Trial. He showed up at my house and Cheyenne was like Mom - Mom can we keep Him??? This was during the day. I literally had to drag her back in the house, I corralled the stray male and then took her outside to go potty again. Sad part was I called the Kennel club who held the trail, I posted on lost dog sites, called all the local Vet's and no one called to claim him, he wasn't a young dog so I suppose in someones eyes he served his purpose. So after weeks I found him a good home that would play ball with him which was what he lived for.

Thanks a lot. I have the diapers but haven't tried dog wrangling yet-I better learn fast. The concern of encounters at night is pretty real. People are pretty good about keeping their dogs on leash during the day, but after 10:00 or so-everybody thinks he's alone (including David) and lets the dog explore. That will stop.

Well, this summer the Barker Sisters the second went on strike and flat refused to track = I've been frustrated. I think we're getting it back but I'm not sure they're forgiven just yet. I'm taking this to private message BTW just to avoid boring other folks, Injecting topics that I should not etc...

Vigilance .. On leash at night outside. On leash when there is any possibility of suitors. Although my property is fully fenced and there have been no evident "romeos" our last outing of the evening is on lead.

"Panties" for inside - especially if you have carpet anywhere. . (Remember to take them off when you go out....) And she may bleed for all three weeks. Many people avoid male dogs for an extra week. For some dogs I've had success modifying women's briefs, others need dog ones.. My dogs have always accepted the britches. They can be extra stinky.

First - Congratulations on your new girl, we'll wait for pics.

With my girls and their first heat, I bought sanitary supplies, basically a diaper type arrangement, because she will start to spot heavier as time goes on (2-3 weeks) - especially if she is free in the house.
Definitely avoid other dogs during this time.

I'm slipping a new dog here under the radar because we don't have any pics for a proper introduction. She's Nova who has been home 2 months tomorrow-she was born Oct 30 last year-not quite 10 months old. She will be spayed when she's older.

So she is spotting blood here or there and is a bit clingy. Her major change in behavior is a huge appetite, she is pretty small right now.

What should we expect? She seems very interested in the markings of the boy beagle down the street. I guess we just avoid dogs, Nova is always on leash outside.

thanks for any guidance,
Mary Jane
