So my vet (a VCA affiliate) now says that their inhouse CompuGuard medicine for Fleas, Worms and Heartworms is a better alternative to my customary (5+ years) Frontline Plus for Fleas and Ticks and a separate heartworm medicine (QuadriGuard). This QuadriGuard is also an inhouse VCA Vethical product that the vet switched to some time ago from another Heartworm medicine that they used to prescibe. I did notice that the Quadrguard also is intended to treat worms (round, hook and tape worms).

And the vet is pushing a Tick collar to take care of the Ticks.

Anybody have any experience with these products? Good or bad?

It did seem odd that both products would be needed to treat the worms.

The difference in cost of the options is not of any concern as it is not that much different but I would like anyones opinion of the different medicines.

Thanks.

Here's what you are using now: http://www.vethical.com/heartworm-treatment.html

Had to edit this message - it didn't come up on a google, but here's what your vet is moving to: http://www.vethical.com/comboguard.html Looks like generic Triflexis: http://www.trifexis.com/ Some dogs seem to do fine on this, though several dogs online are reporting very serious reactions.

Personally, if a med has been working for so long, I'm hesitant to trade it in for something newer, until it's been on the market for a very long time - I'm not going to let my dog be the guinea pig for the medicine.

I don't like these combination products, but that is the trend.

Edit #2 - the tick collar - there is a new one out, but, it is new, again, we don't know much about side effects yet either (Seresto??? something like that, may also deal with fleas, you don't want double coverage). The Preventic tick collar has been effective, only deals with ticks, but everything has potential side effects for the susceptible dog.

I would personally refrain from a tick collar. Especially if already on other tick and flea meds.

My understanding, is that nothing else the vet recommended covers ticks. This would be a replacement for the flea and tick med, since the HW now covers fleas.

NOT saying all these combinations are safe! We have no idea, they don't seem to test them together, which they should.

A search on the forum should bring up a link to recent problem with triflexis - I have no clue how large a problem this is.
