Have any of you morel hunters out there taught your dog to find morels? Did it work? How did you do it?

I haven't but have no doubt that you could. These dogs noses are incredible. I'm betting it would be similar to training for truffle hunting.

Found this for you. I'm at work so can watch the full video but maybe you'll find it interesting.

Thanks, Vinnie. I will have to watch it when I get home.

I would like to ask some more detailed questions of someone who has done it before. I am sure that Grizz is capable, but I wonder things like...

- Would dried morels work for scent training?
- Are the varieties different enough that he would only scent the kind I train him with?
- How can I teach this different enough that he will not indicate a morel when SchH tracking? Maybe I would just have to avoid trialing in May. smile

We use different command words for scent detection and SchH Tracking. Also scent detection is a completely different training than footstep tracking. I would assume that you'd train mushroom hunting more like you'd train scent detection. The mushroom isn't going to leave a track to follow so you can track and find it. wink

LOL. True. I am more concerned about him leaving the track if he scents a morel. Wonder if it os even worth trying since the morel season is so short.
