With the great discussions this last week on the forum, I was thinking about all the different places we are in our training "careers"(regardless of what kind). I thought of the competence learning model and that it might make for an interesting discussion. Where do you think you are MOSTLY in the competence model and why? For those who aren’t familiar with the model, I included a quote and link below. Level 1 – Unconscious Incompetence(You Don't Know that You Don't Know) At this level you are blissfully ignorant: You have a complete lack of knowledge and skills in the subject in question. On top of this, you are unaware of this lack of skill, and your confidence may therefore far exceed your abilities. Level 2 – Conscious Incompetence(You Know that You Don't Know) At this level you find that there are skills you need to learn, and you may be shocked to discover that there are others who are much more competent than you. As you realize that your ability is limited, your confidence drops. You go through an uncomfortable period as you learn these new skills when others are much more competent and successful than you are. Level 3 – Conscious Competence (You Know that You Know) At this level you acquire the new skills and knowledge. You put your learning into practice and you gain confidence in carrying out the tasks or jobs involved. You are aware of your new skills and work on refining them. You are still concentrating on the performance of these activities, but as you get ever-more practice and experience, these become increasingly automatic. Level 4 – Unconscious Competence (You Don't Know that You Know – It Just Seems Easy!) At this level your new skills become habits, and you perform the task without conscious effort and with automatic ease. Training Type: Schutzhund
Level: 10% Level 1, 40% Level 2, and 50% Level 3
After 2 1/2 years, I think I am pretty aware that I don't know much! However, there are a few things I understand the theory and have moved to level 3 where I am practicing it. There are a few things where I feel confident training, but it is not to the point of being unconscious yet. I still have to really think about what I am doing. It isn't automatic and natural.

Don't make me think too hard in the morning. I am net surfing while waiting for my email to load at work. (Love having 2 monitors!) In Schutzhunnd I would say that I am a level 1, particularly in protection. I am clueless. I would put me at level 2 for obedience adn tracking even tho I have done these 2 sports in AKC for 20 plus years. The rules and scoring are different. I believe I will move to level 3 rapidly, as my career field is Quality Assurnace and a big part of my job is interpreting and applying federal regulations. In agility I would say I am at level 2/3. I have done agility for years but had a long break between dogs as Kayos was not able to do agility with her hips and Havoc has been an speed demon over drive nut.  I am learning all kinds of new things here too about my handling or lack of it.  Obedience (AKC/UKC type) I would sat firmly level 3. I am pretty good but each dog is different and is a challenge in thier own way so I am always learning. Behavior and reactivity issues I waould also asy level 3. I am pretty good with it as I have dealt with a few dogs with issues but am certianly no expert. There are always new techniques to apply and as a non professional I would never say I was at a level 4.

Interesting, but when it comes to training I think there should be a level 5 (maybe more levels, I'm not sure). A good trainer never stops learning, because every dog teaches you something new. So while you might reach level 4 for many tasks, you should still be using some of level 3 to work through the new things you're learning.
So a level 5 might be "Combined Consciousness Competence" where it's a mix of unconscious and conscious actions as you continue to learn while still having a high level of expertise in the learned skills. I think a lot of trainers are at this spot - some things are extremely easy and we don't even think about them as we do them, while others still need to be worked out to fit that specific dog.

Everyone is in combined consciousness. The scale applies to each individual task, so for the sake of this discussion I think we have to average.
Where I think this is applicable is to understand where other people are coming from. I read the self proclaimed "old timers" getting frustrated with all the questions saying "just work your dog" and I read newbies sounding off about stuff that they have never been exposed to showing their ignorance. One of the symptoms of those in Unconscious Competence is impatience with others who do not share their skill. One of the symptoms of Unconscious Incompitence is misplaced bravado.

Amy what do you do for a living?? Just curious! I am a corporate trainer.  My title is "Senior Training Specialist". Most often I write training material both classroom and web based. I also teach, manage projects, set strategy, and do performance consulting. That explains where this is coming from doesn't it?

I am QA person so it is all about RULES and REGULATIONS! I work with your kind  ...LOL! Seriously though, my husband was a Quality Resident Engineer. I so appreciate that type of brain that always have a plan and follows through with everything. When I lead a team to create training for implementing an ERP system I looked for people like you!

Fixing problems that other people created in their dogs: 3 and 4 Since 1992. I don't compete, I don't do sports, I take dogs that have either been created by someone somewhere to have issues genetically, or have been taught to have problems by people and their environments, and I try to undo that. Specializing in fearful dogs and fear aggression with humans, and starting puppies out on the right paw. Not proficient/level 2 in cases of dog aggression and some overall aggression. Also in "friendly dogs" and environments where dogs are pressed to be too close, too fast.

Within the context of the things that I train dogs for (if that makes sense?) Level 3 or sometimes Level 4. I say Level 4 sometimes because often someone will ask me to break down how I trained this or that and there are times that I can't, or at least not without really thinking about it, b/c it's just second nature by now and just seems to *work* for my dogs. But for the most part, Level 3.

LOL! Very well could be. Take that as a compliment though. One of the main reasons I married my husband was because he could hold his own in an arguement.

Pet Owner, no specialized training. Definitely Level 2. I know what to do, but have a hard time executing it. This.

I’m a Level 2 skill-level wise, but a Level 3+ implementing those skills. I do basic obedience with some back-yard agility thrown in (Level 2 – basically low degree of difficulty), but my guys respond quickly, eagerly, and almost automatically (Level 3+ in communicating my commands). If only I were younger – what I wouldn’t like to learn and try…
Ah well, if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.
