Hello German Shepherd lovers! I am here to share with everyone's journey of being a German Shepherd owner. My husband and I own our first German Shepherd who is 3 and a half years old. My husband wanted a guard dog to protect me when he's away at work. With him being a police officer, he's always been fascinated with German Shepherds. We got one so he can have the dog of his dreams. The original deal was that he do the training... since he wanted a dog and I was one of the ignorant many that think a German Shepherd is too aggressively unpredictable to own in a neighborhood. After adopting Abbey at 8 months old, and 4 weeks later of no training but housebreaking; she nearly bit someone who came into our property. I took over the training. I was NOT about to have a dog bite situation in our hands. I did tons of research on books, internet, watched Ceasar Milan and Victoria, and applied what I learned to Abbey. Now she's a wonderul, obedient dog and I just fell in love with the breed. It was a tough beginning as I never had to work so hard to train a dog who is not food driven and had to learn that a well behaved, calm dog is a tired dog. The loyalty she shows, the intelligence she has, and her fun personality made me decide that not all German Shepherds are unpredictable as long as they are properly cared for. I'm still learning as a first-time German Shepherd owner and am looking forward to learning more things from other owners of this wonderful breed.

Welcome you have come to the right place and thanks for hanging in there with Abbey. These dogs are very smart and need a smart committed owner. Sounds like you are it!

Welcome. I think many of us are still learning because I have found that my dogs are all different and I need to modify or change things for each dog.
