Never leave two dogs alone with collars on, more than once I've seen posts where the owner came home to either a seriously injured or dead dog. They often play with their mouths and it's easy for a jaw to slip under a collar and then the dog can not get lose. OMG yesssss! That's exactly what happened here one night a few years ago and thank goodness I was right there. I nearly lost Nissa, she was starting to go down when I finally got them apart. We do not collar our dogs at home anymore, only for walks and when we take them somewhere and are right with them to supervise.

If your current dog is not on a raw diet, I would suggest strongly converting him. OMG – how did dog bites & raw feeding get into this thread? Since most of this is opinions anyway, the only thing I’ll really bother to comment on from your post is the raw feeding comment. Everyone does NOT have to feed their dogs a raw diet (this coming from a person who does feed her dogs a raw diet). Some people simply can NOT feed a raw diet to their dog for some very good reasons. There are some very good pre-packaged dry dog foods on the market. Not all dry dog foods will cause allergies and “dangerous” behaviors. Feeding a raw diet is not a mandatory requirement to having a happy/healthy dog. And just one tiny other thing (more looking for clarification); I definitely and whole-heartedly do NOT agree with jeasy02. Dogs are pack animals, the right dogs together are a comfort and a friend to one another. You sound pretty strong about that but I'm wondering if I've missed something here? Where does jeasy02 say he doesn’t think dogs are pack animals? Or that it doesn’t take the right dogs to be together?

More than 1 GSD is not a necessity. My first GSD was my only dog for many years. His pack included a Siamese Cat, my DH and myself and distantly our horse, he felt it was his job to remind me it was time to feed the horse. My GSD didn't care about other dogs, he would just look at other dogs, he had no interest in playing with them. Yes dogs are pack animals but I believe there pack doesn't have to have another GSD.
Deb, sorry I didn't grab the quote, but not every dog needs to be on a raw diet. Again my first GSD live to be 13 1/2 years old and I fed him Purina Mainstay and left overs. No allergy problems no digestive problems. If your dog benefits from a raw diet that is great, but to post strong statements that imply the rest of us are bad owners because we don't fed raw is pretty unfair.

I didn't say every dog needs to be on a raw diet, I just strongly suggested it. I never intended to say, insinuate or in any other fashion of suggestion that if you didn't feed raw you were a bad owner. Sorry if you got the wrong idea from my words or assumed something that wasn't there.

i think you meant you dont agree with me, as you mention small dogs... not the OP Oops, I'm sorry - mentioned the wrong poster - was referring to this: buying another dog to keep the first company is a stupid idea. why on earth do you think your dog wants to share it's life, it's humans and it's territory with another dog? i just never get this "friend for my dog idea".

yes, that would be me..and i stand by it IF you are a person that is not going to have time for both. the OP has had issues in the past with having time for one dog , due to work schedule i believe, this leads me to believe that he feels by getting another dog, the two dogs will entertain and exercise themselves-"friend for my dog idea". if you are getting another dog and are able to spend time with them both, then you are getting another dog for yourself. i think of these two distinctively different reasons the first doesnt really benefit anyone .

I wasn't aware of previous issues. Totally agree one needs to be able to spend time with their dog(s). But I'm not convinced that getting a 2nd dog is a bad idea. Since he already has a dog at least there would be companionship for the first dog when he's not there and dogs do need companionship. believe that he feels by getting another dog, the two dogs will entertain and exercise themselves-"friend for my dog idea". Maybe I need more coffee, I seem to be totally missing what's bad about this? There are probably thousands (if not more) one-dog households where the dogs seem to do fine. On the other hand there are probably just as many multiple dog households with the same results. Who's to say solo dogs wouldn't appreciate company when they are home without their owners?
