Gayle, I think she is saying good bye to people, like good riddens, you are taking up too much of my moms time. She will also bark if the phone rings past a certain time at night or too early in the morning. If I am doing laundry and I didn't hear the beep for the dryer she will bark to let me know the dry was calling me. She communicates with me a lot. My DH will ask her is she has to go potty and not a word, but if I ask and she has to go she will tell me with a certain barking pattern that is like "Yes I have to go potty, get you butt moving".

I tend to be softer on my old dogs. I tolerate more and expect less. IMO they have earned it.
