Hi there,

Wasn't real sure where to post this but decided here because it's a behavior issue the Melatonin is for. Mods - please move if you need to.

I'm preparing for our next thunderstorm and Nissa's storm-phobia. She's already got a Thundershirt which really doesn't do much on it's own. When I combine the shirt w/the highest dose of calm tabs I can (which don't do a lot on their own either) it's a little better but not much.

I now have Comfort Zone spray and a bandana to spray it on which will be the first step provided the storm doesn't sneak up on us. I have a bottle of Rescue Remedy which we've never tried and I got a bottle of 5mg Melatonin tabs. I do have *all* the Bach's flowers so if anyone's got a better combination than Rescue Remedy I'm all ears.

The Melatonin will be my last resort out of the three but I don't know what's a safe dosage. She weighs about 78 lbs. I don't have the bottle with me here at work but as I recall it wasn't real dosage specific.

Thanks!

I have the 300mcg human grade and give Kacie 2 caps. I've tried giving her one and it didn't really affect her. She is 85# and will be 6 yrs next month.

Is that supposed to say 300mg? (no c?) Holy cow I'd have to give her the whole bottle at 5mg a tab. Anyone else?

Hi Deb, I didn't see this before.

Jane's post does say mcg smile

With Indy, I used to give her a sublingual 1mg tablet and that helped her. I have some 3 mg tablets here that I would use on Max if he needed it. I might try a 1/2 tablet of the one that you have to start.

Jane, I'm impressed if 2 tablets of that tablet works, that's great smile

Ok so 1/2 of the 5mg tab and if that doesn't help give her the other half after like 30min or so? I don't know what a sublingual anything is?

I used to use the same ones you have - 5 mg. I gave my 35 pound mix a whole tablet about 20 - 30 minutes before a storm was expected.

1 to 2 tablets should be fine. Is there an adult dosage on the bottle? I would use that amount.

When you can see the edge is off a little try to do simple obedience, tricks or fetch - anything to take her mind off the thunder. It will help.

I don't have the bottle w/me but I remember I was asking here because the dosage wasn't spelled out real well - which I think is really strange. I thought these companies were required to give specific dose info.

I give my aussie melatonin for Tstorm phobia..she weighs in at around 45# and I give her 2/3mg's..so 6mg total..they say it takes about 30 minutes to kick in, Jynx is still a panting ball of petrified fur:) but I think it does chill her out some..

I take 1mg myself before bed, and it does help me sleep better, wake up with no effects:)

It takes the edge off and Kacie just sleeps. She isn't real phobic, but just clingy and anxious. This spring, the storms don't have her so on edge, I think her storm fear is lessening.

I believe the tabs I have are the equivilant to 3mg. NOT 300mg/and the directions are 1 tab for adults.
I would use it on the dog in a normal weather pattern, just to see the effects or if it does nothing.

I reread the bottle tonight and it says one tab (5mg). Doesn't indicate child or adult but I'm going to assume this is the adult dosage because I can't imaging it's something you give kids. Thanks for all the input.

Just for everyone's info -- I checked w/the vet. At 78# she can have up to 100mg per day. So no more worries about if I'm going to OD my dog on melatonine <g> cuz the most she may need come fireworks is prolly only going to be 2-3 tabs = 10-15mg which is well under the 100mg daily allowance.

I really hope it helps her cope with the noise. Be sure to give the first dose early enough and do some light obedience or fun games with her to distract her from the sounds.

Keep us posted!

100mg per day of melatonin????? That would scare me and I would ask the vet for such a reference. I've looked, and I can't find dosage recommendations, except for alopecia, which isn't asking the same question.

For alopecia, for dogs over 40 pounds, they use 18 mg either once or twice a year in an implant: http://www.drugs.com/vet/dermatonin.html

Oral dosing for alopecia here:
* 1 mg for dogs weighing less than 10 lbs
* 1.5 mg for dogs weighing between 10 to 25 lbs
* 3 mg for dogs weighing between 26 to 100 lbs
* 3 to 6 mg for dogs weighing over 100 lbs
http://www.vetinfo.com/melatonin-supplements-for-dogs.html

Dosing for a one time thing like a thunderstorm could be dosed higher I would think. I would try 3 of your tablets. If that works, next time try two.

I just ran across this Bach Remedy flyer that I'm about to toss, and it specifically says that for fear of thunder and lighting, visits to the vet, etc. use Mimulus.

And for everyone else --- if you're going to try melatonin --- please call your own vet for their dosage recommendation/high end limit for your dog. Do NOT just use what my vet said as your base. I refuse to be held responsible if somenoe gives their dog this stuff and turns out there's a problem or whatever. I just want to be sure everyone is clear on this.

For small dogs I would buy smaller dose tabs but that's just me.

Melatonin is supposed to be super safe but to me that doesn't mean you can toss caution and common senese to the wind.

It still works groovy

Even if I don't notice the early signs of a storm and give it to her after the first clap of thunder, within about 10 minutes she's laying down calmly and a couple days ago actually ate her breakfast where normally she would not touch food for quite some time after a storm passes.

Bianca - how much did you give your dog? My believe is that it's not just the dog's weight one must consider when trying at least this remedy and probably others as well depending on their safeness. I think we need to consider how strongly each individual dog is affected by the problem sound.

I know for sure many dogs have the storm-phobia thing much worse than Nissa so she probably doesn't need as much as more severely affected dogs.

If your dog has a more severe reaction than Nissa, you may need to up the dose a little but staying w/in your vets safe zone for dosage.

Nissa's now actually gone through a *mild* storm or two w/o any melatonin. She's not totally calm but a whole heckuva lot better than pre-melatonin. I have a little hope that maybe eventually she won't need to be medicated w/anything.

I know this is not quite along the same lines as the main topic, but when you give your dog melatonin, do you find that it messes up their sleep schedule any? I know it helps me get to sleep easier, but then my body doesn't seem to know when it is supposed to fall asleep for the next couple days. Just something I am curious about.

My dog can occasionally have some problems in public places and this is something I've been considering doing (with very low doses) while I socialize, socialize, socialize and train that nervous reaction out of him.

I don't find it messes up jynx's sleep schedule any, she's still raring to go or dead lead on the couch. She's almost 12 years old, so may be something i just don't notice. I have given it to her during the day for a storm coming in, doesn't ever 'knock' her out, but tends to chill her out. Definately isn't a cure for her, she's still afraid/quivering/back of nerves but not as bad as if she didn't have any.

I use it just about every nite, I know when I don't use it, I definately have a harder time falling asleep..

I do find if I 'up' my dose, I sleep later in the morning.

Doesn't seem to bother Nissa at all. She's usually more quiet for most of the day. It doesn't knock her out either, just relaxes her like Jakoda mentions.

I don't know how much you're giving her but maybe try a bit larger dose (ok'd by your vet first)? I'm amazed at what one 5mg tab does for Nissa smile
