Was curious to know about male behavior before neutering. Kaiya will be 18 mos soon, so I will be having her spayed and we are considering adopting a male gsd into the family. I would like to wait until he is fully developed before neutering, but I wanna say I've heard that intact males can have behavior or aggression issues?? I don't wanna hinder his development by neutering too soon, but do they tend to be more of a handful prior to being neutered?

I would say it depends on the male.

I've had two males that were intact until almost 3 years old, they were big doofers:) behaviorally, all I really saw was a lack of brains when around the girlz, drooling, teeth chattering..Neither ever really tried to mate with a female, altho they also were never given the chance either.

A little scatterbrained I'd say, but they were kinda scatterbrains to begin with, neutering seemed to put their brains back in their heads

Lol. That's funny. I think I can deal with the scatterbrain. Did you find the females or males easier to train? Or would you say it depended on the dog itself?

I think it depends on the dog not the gender

I have had males and females but I have always neutered the males by about 14 months. I have found that they are just as easy to train.

I agree with Johanna. My male is intact/almost 2 and I have seen nothing behavior-wise that would give me a reason to neuter him. I was training a couple days ago at a home with a female in heat. She was in the house and we were in the connected garage.
She had been in the garage training just before we arrived.
He worked just fine and unless I didn't know about the female, never would have known by his behavior.

I have two spayed females and now my male also. He is 9 months and I don't plan on neutering him until he finishes growing. One of my females has recurring vaginal fold issues, so he can pester her, but he is learning that's off limits!

Karlo will try to mount my spayed females too, but they put him in his place. When Onyx was wearing her cone, he really found her attractive because she couldn't correct him!!

It's funny because Vigo never tries with Kira...even now when he outweighs her by a good 15 lbs. She is a firecracker and he knows it. Grace is much more docile and when correcting Vigo, she looks to me for guidance/confirmation a lot. He gets better with her all the time and their relationship is balancing out...just taking some time. Luckily, all it takes is a glance at me to see I have a squirt bottle in hand and off he goes wink

If you adopt, it is likely they will be neutered or will need to be within a certain period of time.

ETA - as far as humping, I have had two neutered males fosters, not GSD but my gosh...they were/are (DYLAN) like a Benny Hill sketch.
